Cannons Lose Heartbreaker in OT

April 26, 2015 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) - Boston Cannons News Release

The Cannons late comeback fell just short as they dropped a heart-breaker to the Charlotte Hounds 12-11 in overtime. After going down early in the game, Boston made a late run and forced the game into overtime only to be spoiled by Mike Sawyer's game-winning goal. The loss drops the Cannons to 1-1 on the season and 5-2 all-time against Charlotte.

Boston had its struggles early in the first quarter as they went down early 5-1. The Hounds dominated the face-off X as Brendan Fowler went 16 of 25. Attackman Justin Ward started off the scoring for Charlotte with an unassisted tally just a minute and forty-four seconds into the game. Davey Emala would answer for the Boston a minute later on an unassisted goal coming around the right side of the net. However that would be the end of the Cannons scoring in the first quarter despite two extra man opportunities. The Hounds pounced on the opportunity and went on a 4-0 run starting with an unassisted goal from midfielder Kevin Drew. Charlotte's Thomas Denapoli would then join in the scoring on a feed from Terry Kimener. Jake Tripucka and Ryan Haus capped off the Hound's first half scoring both on unassisted goals.

The second half showcased a much improved performance by Boston as they would close the gap to 6-5 before the half ended. After an early goal from Charlotte's Mike Sawyer, the Cannons rallied behind two straight goals from Jim Connolly, the second one on an incredible behind the back finish from a Will Manny feed. Rob Emery continued the Boston run on a roll back shot from the left wing and Manny capped the second quarter scoring with a great finish from a Connolly assist.

The third quarter was all Charlotte as they scored three straight unanswered goals. First, defenseman Ryan Flanagan would strike on an unsettled fast-break situation after carrying the ball up the field. Denapoli and Haus continued the scoring as they each scored their second goals of the game. Charlotte's defense held Boston scoreless in the third quarter, however the drought would not last long.

The fourth quarter began with a goalie change for Boston as Adam Ghitelman took over between the pipes for Jordan Burke. Ghitelman provided a nice spark off of the bench as he recorded four saves on the day. The Hounds would pay for a technical pushing penalty as Will Manny capitalized on the extra man opportunity with a quick stick finish from a Ryan Young feed. Charlotte responded with two straight goals, first when Tripucka connected with Haus on a man-up situation. Josh Hawkins followed that up by finishing a feed from Kevin Drew on a fast-break.

Scott Ratliff sparked the Cannon's comeback run with a deep two point shot in an unsettled situation. Davey Emala continued Boston's momentum by putting in two more goals. The first one coming on a fast-break feed from Ratliff. His second goal was an impressive finish off a saved Josh Amidon shot on the crease as he pulled the Cannons within one with a minute and a half left to play. Josh Amidon tied the game at eleven with just 30 seconds left as Rob Emery found him wide open popping to the backside.

The two teams exchanged a couple of possessions in overtime before Denapoli found Sawyer for his second goal of the game and the game-winner.

Mike Sawyer of Charlotte was named the Coca-Cola player of the game finishing the game with two goals, including the game winner.

The Cannons will return to action at home May 3rd where they take on the NY Lizards at Gillette Stadium at 5pm.
