Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Moosic, PA) - The Scranton RailRiders struck for three first-inning runs and never looked back in an 8-3 win over the PawSox on Sunday afternoon. The victory earned Scranton a split in a four-game series at PNC Field.
The RailRiders (9-9) plated the trio of runs on four hits off Pawtucket (11-7) starter Keith Couch, the last of which was a two-run single from Ben Gamel. Couch worked around a hit and a walk in the second inning by inducing a double play ball, and the PawSox offense made things interesting immediately thereafter.
Scranton starter Matt Tracy had retired the first six PawSox hitters, but allowed a leadoff single to Deven Marrero. Humberto Quintero then blasted his third home run in eight games to make it a 3-2 game.
Couch (1-3) then retired five in a row before he surrendered a solo homer to Rob Segedin that pushed the RailRiders in front 4-2.
The PawSox starter was chased in the sixth inning after he allowed consecutive hits with one out. Miguel Celestino came on and induced a ground ball from Segedin that bounced off the glove of Travis Shaw at third. After Slade Heathcott singled to center, Celestino got another grounder to first. Matt Spring's throw home was low and allowed two runs to score and ballooned to 'Riders lead to 7-2. Scranton's final run scored on a Refsnyder single.
Spring got the PawSox a run closer with a solo homer in the top of the seventh; the blast was the only run Pawtucket notched off of Joel de La Cruz, who went four innings and earned the win.
The PawSox return to McCoy Stadium Monday at 6:15pm to begin a seven-game homestand, with four games against Syracuse. In the opener, Brian Johnson (2-1, 0.56) will match up with Chiefs' righthander A.J. Cole (0-0, 2.40).
Good seats for all games in the homestand are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
