Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - John Gant fired seven scoreless innings and the Binghamton Mets backed him with two home runs in a 3-0 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Sunday afternoon at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Jared King and Xorge Carrillo each went deep to help the B-Mets snap a three-game losing streak and avoid a four-game sweep.
King started the game with a bang, belting Taylor Cole's second pitch off the base of the light pole beyond the right-field wall for his second home run of the season. Carrillo extended Binghamton's lead with a two-run homer in the second, his first round-tripper of the season.
Given an early lead, Gant cruised through his first five innings, facing one over the minimum. The righty surrendered three singles and walked one, but avoided any harm as Carrillo gunned down two runners at second base.
Gant's first real test came in the sixth when Pierce Rankin singled and Josh Rodriguez booted a potential double-play ball at short. After walking Ryan Schimpf to load the bases, Gant induced Melky Mesa to shoot a grounder to Rodriguez for an inning-ending double play.
Gant capped his day with a blank seventh inning before ceding to the bullpen, Dario Alvarez worked a perfect eighth and Jon Velasquez tossed a blank ninth to earn his fifth save of the season. Gant (1-1) struck out five and allowed just four singles to earn his first Double-A victory.
Cole (0-2) settled down after giving up two home runs in the first two innings and capped his day with four scoreless frames, retiring the final nine B-Mets he faced in the losing effort.
The B-Mets (9-8) continue their week-long road trip in Portland, Maine. The team opens a three-game series on Monday night at 6:00 PM. RHP Seth Lugo toes the rubber against RHP Luis Diaz. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 5:45 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
