Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

The Boston Red Sox today recalled right-handed pitcher Heath Hembree from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Matt Barnes was optioned to Pawtucket. Hembree will be available for today's game against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards beginning at 1:35 p.m.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

This is the first major league stint of the season for Hembree, 26, who will wear No. 37. He began the year with Pawtucket and has not allowed a run in six relief appearances at Triple-A this season, recording two saves. In 8.0 innings with the PawSox, he has fanned 10 batters while allowing only three hits and two walks. The right-hander last pitched on Friday night, tossing a scoreless inning in a 6-2 win at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He is in his first full season in the Red Sox organization after being acquired from the San Francisco Giants on July 26, 2014. Last year, he combined to go 1-4 with 20 saves, a 3.71 ERA (19 ER/46.0 IP), and 55 strikeouts in 48 relief appearances between Triple-A Fresno and Pawtucket, and was named a mid-season Pacific Coast League All-Star. In parts of two major league seasons with the Giants (2013) and Red Sox (2014), Hembree has no record, a 2.55 ERA (5 ER/17.2 IP) and 18 strikeouts. He appeared in six games over three stints with Boston in 2014, allowing five runs in 10.0 innings for a 4.50 ERA.

Barnes, 24, was recalled from Pawtucket prior to last night's game against the Baltimore Orioles for his first major league stint of the season. He pitched 2.0 scoreless innings in Boston's 5-4 loss, allowing two hits and no walks with one strikeout. In two starts for the PawSox this season, he has a 5.62 ERA (5 ER/8.0 IP) with six strikeouts and no record. A native of Connecticut, Barnes made his major league debut as a September call-up with Boston last season. In six major league outings, he owns a 3.27 ERA (4 ER/11.0 IP) with nine strikeouts. Signed by the Red Sox as a first-round selection in the 2011 June Draft, Barnes is 21-24 with a 3.69 ERA (151 ER/368.2 IP) and 384 strikeouts in 75 career minor league outings (74 starts) from 2012-15.
