Roughnecks Fall 2-0 in Louisville
April 26, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
FC Tulsa News Release
The first away match of the season for Tulsa Roughnecks FC resulted in a 2-0 loss to Louisville City FC Saturday night at Louisville Slugger Field. The Roughnecks surrendered a first-half goal and were victims of an own goal late in the match to account for the final score line.
The match was contested in wet conditions as the skies opened up just as the National Anthem started. A downpour and a brief hail storm made for wet and slick conditions.
The Roughnecks spent much of the first part of the match in their own half before creating a dangerous chance in the 16th minute. Sammy Ochoa got free down the right side and was in on goalkeeper Magnus Rasmussen. Ochoa's initial cross was blocked by the defense before his follow shot off the rebound was blocked by Rasmussen.
Six minutes later, former MLS striker Matt Fondy gave Louisville the lead. His header from the back post beat goalkeeper Zac Lubin. It was the first goal of the season for the former Chicago Fire and Chivas USA striker.
The Roughnecks had a good spell of possession to end the half, but still trailed entering halftime.
After the interval, Tulsa gained an advantage in the 55th minute when Louisville midfielder Charlie Adams was given a straight red card for a late challenge on Chad Bond.
The Roughnecks used the man advantage to apply pressure on the Louisville goal. A good chance came in the 60th minute when right back Ryan Price pushed up the field for a header, but his attempt went wide and kept Tulsa scoreless.
Coach David Irving made four substitutions in search of a tying goal, as Kidd Nwabueze, Andy Lorei, Adam Black, Laurie Bell and Julian Portugal were inserted.
Tulsa's hopes of getting a point on the road ended in the 89th minute. After Nwabueze's header was saved by Rasmussen, Louisville City struck at the other end. Fondy's header caromed off the crossbar and onto the foot of Nate Polak. Polak's shot was headed well wide of goal, but deflected off Price and into the net for a game-clinching own goal.
The defeat left the Roughnecks with four points through five matches. They will be off next weekend before traveling west for a match with Arizona United SC at Scottsdale Stadium on Saturday, May 9. Kickoff in the desert is scheduled for 9:30PM Tulsa time.
