Stockton Ports News Release

VISALIA, Calif. - For the third time in a week, the Stockton Ports failed to push a run across versus the Visalia Rawhide. In a game that went scoreless into the seventh, Visalia scored four runs over the final two innings to hand the Ports a 4-0 loss and in doing so, pick up their seventh straight victory.

Both starting pitchers came through with strong outings on Saturday night. Ports starter Dylan Covey pitched around a leadoff triple in the bottom of the first, one of only two hits he allowed on the night. Covey would toss six scoreless innings and pitch around a career-high five walks allowed while falling one strikeout shy of a career-best with seven on the night as he received a no-decision.

Rawhide starter Zack Godley (4-0) also allowed only two hits in his outing. Godley pitched around a one-out single by Justin Higley in the second and an infield single by Franklin Barreto that led off the third. After the Barreto single, which ended up being the last hit of the night for the Ports, Godley retired eight batters in a row.

Godley earned the win, tossing seven scoreless innings and allowing two hits while walking one and striking out four.

Sam Roberts (0-1) took over for Covey to begin the bottom of the seventh. After recording a strikeout to open the frame, Roberts gave up an infield single to Breland Almadadova. After Almadova advanced to second on a wild pitch, Domingo Leyba drove him in with a two-out single to right to break the scoreless tie and give the Rawhide a 1-0 lead.

Roberts suffered the loss as he allowed one run on two hits in his lone inning of work.

Visalia padded the lead in the eighth facing Corey Walter. Walter gave up a leadoff double to Stewart Ijames, followed by an RBI single to George Roberts and an RBI double to Tyler Baker to make it a 3-0 game. Baker scored later in the inning on a two-out throwing error committed by the shortstop Barreto to give the Rawhide a 4-0 cushion. Walter allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits in his lone inning of relief.

Daniel Gibson set the side down in order including a pair of strikeouts in the eighth while Silvino Bracho pitched around a one-out walk to keep the Ports off the board in the ninth and preserve the shutout for the Rawhide.

The Ports and Rawhide wrap up their four-game set with a Sunday matinee at Recreation Ballpark. Tim Atherton (0-0, 1.59 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Visalia right-hander Blayne Weller (1-1, 3.63 ERA). First pitch is set for 1 p.m. PDT.
