Dayton Rallies to Beat 'Caps

West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
DAYTON, OH - The West Michigan Whitecaps allowed a late lead to slip away, as the Dayton Dragons rallied to score a pair of runs in the ninth inning and defeat the 'Caps 4-3 Saturday at Fifth Third Field.
West Michigan scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings thanks to a Dragons error and sacrifice fly by Mike Gerber. Dayton scored both of their early runs on RBI-singles by Dragons catcher Garrett Boulware to tie the game at two after six innings. In the ninth, Gerber lined a go-ahead single to give West Michigan a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Whitecaps bullpen walked three batters, and the defense made two errors to allow Dayton to rally for a 4-3 win. The game-winning run scored when first baseman Giancarlo Brugnoni mishandled a ground ball hit by designated hitter Ronald Bueno, and his flip to first base pulled pitcher Johan Belisario off the bag, scoring Dayton shortstop Luis Gonzalez.
The Whitecaps committed three errors in the contest, tying a season-high for miscues in a game. Their two miscues in the ninth marks the first time they had made two errors in a single inning this season.
West Michigan reliever Gabe Hemmer (0-1) was excellent in his first two innings of work, but struggled in the ninth inning, walking two batters and suffering his first loss of the season. Dragons reliever Brian Hunter (1-0) earned his first win despite allowing a run to score in the ninth.
WHEN THERE'S A WILL...
Saturday's game began on time despite steady rain showers circulated over the Dayton area throughout most of the afternoon. The Whitecaps home opener against the Dragons was postponed for the first time in team history back on April 9.
