Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - The Arkansas Travelers came from behind for the 3-1 win against the Springfield Cardinals before 5,076 fans at Hammons Field on Saturday night.
Cardinals RHP Andrew Morales and Travelers LHP Nate Smith (W, 3-0) dueled back and forth, keeping the opposing lineups in check. Morales dealt five scoreless innings with only two hits allowed, striking out three and walking four. In just his third start in Double-A, the 22 year-old lowered his season ERA to only 1.69.
Smith countered with five scoreless innings of his own, but the Cardinals (5-10) broke through against the southpaw in the bottom of the sixth. With two down and the bases empty, 2B Jacob Wilson slugged a solo blast over the right field fence into the brand-new section, Homers Landing. Wilson's second homer in as many days, and fourth on the year already, lifted the Cardinals in front, 1-0.
The Travelers (10-5), though, responded right away against RHP Corey Baker (L, 1-1) in the top of the seventh. With one down, SS Drew Maggi started the rally with a double, followed by consecutive walks from 2B Sherman Johnson and CF Chad Hinshaw. RF Cal Towey squared the score with an RBI sacrifice fly to center field, plating Maggi and moving Johnson and Hinshaw to third and second, respectively. Both runners then raced home on a two-run single to left field from 3B Brian Hernandez, leap-frogging the Travelers into the 3-1 advantage.
LHP Justin Wright kept the Cardinals close with a pair of scoreless frames, including four strikeouts, in the eighth and ninth. However, Travelers RHP Trevor Gott (S, 3) slammed the door with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth, closing the 3-1 win for Arkansas.
