Reading, PA - Forward Wayne Simpson notched two assists, but the South Carolina Stingrays (2-2) fell to the Reading Royals (2-2) 4-2 in Game 4 of the East Division Semifinals at Santander Arena Saturday night, tying the best-of-seven series 2-2.
Stingrays defenseman Marcus Perrier broke open the scoring 1:29 into the contest on the power play with a blast from the right-wing point beating Royals netminder Connor Knapp (W, 27 saves on 29 shots). Simpson picked up the lone assist. After the tally, the Stingrays received three more man advantages, but could not capitalize.
Penalties spilled over into the second period with both sides receiving three power plays and Royals forward David Marshall evened the score late in the frame catching a cross-ice pass from defenseman Jordan Heywood and lifting it past a sprawled out Stingrays goaltender in Jeff Jakaitis (L, 23 saves on 27 shots).
The Royals added three more goals in the third period to jump out to a 4-1 lead. Defenseman Mike Marcou put Reading in front 3:00 into the frame closely followed by Heywood's third goal of the playoffs at 6:44. Forward Pat Mullane jumped on the score sheet while on the power play at 17:35. Stingrays team captain Andrew Rowe made it a two-goal deficit 18 seconds later lifting the puck over the glove on Knapp with help from defenseman Frankie Simonelli and Simpson.
