Spirit Head out on the Road to Play Sky Blue FC

BOYDS, Md. (April 25, 2015) - The Washington Spirit (1-1-0, 3 points) travel north to New Jersey to face Sky Blue FC (1-0-1, 4 points) this Sunday. Both teams have one win so far this season and both got those points from FC Kansas City. (GAME NOTES)

"The team is looking forward to the Sky Blue game with the aim of building on our performance and keeping momentum going from last week," said head coach Mark Parsons. "With fans traveling from DC it will be a great atmosphere and we will give our best and want to make sure the fans know how much they mean to our team."

Last week the Spirit won in emphatic fashion over defending champion FC Kansas City in the team's home opener at Maureen Hendricks Field. A long range shot from Christine Nairn equalized for the Spirit after going down early in the 6th minute courtesy of a chip from Heather O'Reilly. The Spirit took the lead in the second half thanks to a toe poke goal from Crystal Dunn. The exclamation point to the win came in the form of a signature booming free kick from Nairn who placed the ball in the upper 90 sending it careening off the underside of the cross bar.

The Spirit will have a myriad of attacking options to work with and the starting lineup could feature Dunn as well as recently arrived Nigerian striker Francisca Ordega. Ordega entered the game against FC Kansas City in the second half and consistently impressed throughout her approximately 40 minutes on the pitch as she continued to cause trouble for stalwart center back Becky Sauerbrunn.

Meanwhile, Sky Blue FC will be playing their second consecutive match at home. Last week Sky Blue settled for a 1-1 draw against the Houston Dash. The New Jersey side is managing slight injuries to two key players: defender Christie Rampone and striker Nadia Nadim. The fitness of both Rampone and Nadim could influence the outcome Sunday night.

Veteran defender Ali Krieger is still recovering from her concussion sustained during the NWSL season opening match against the Houston Dash. Krieger is making good progress and has returned to light cardio activity, but will not be available for the game.

Next week the Spirit continue their road trip as they head to the Pacific Northwest to face Seattle Reign FC on Saturday May 2nd at 10 PM.
