ABOUT LAST GAME: The TinCaps opened a six-game homestand with a 5-1 win over South Bend on Friday night at Parkview Field. After South Bend took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Fort Wayne tied it in the home half, jumped in front, 2-1, in the second and didn't look back. The TinCaps added a run in the fourth and two insurance scores in the eighth.
BEST IN THE MIDWEST: The TinCaps had 10 hits Friday night - half of which went for extra bases - and now lead the MWL in team batting with a .272 average. Individually, outfielder Nick Torres is hitting .373 - third highest in the league.
DOUBLING UP: Despite playing three less games than everyone in the league other than Great Lakes, the TinCaps have hit a league-leading 33 doubles. No one else has more than 29.
MOISÉS ALOU'S HOOSIER TIES: Six-time MLB All-Star, and current Padres Special Assistant for Player Development, Moisés Alou is with the TinCaps along with Padres Player Development Director Sam Geaney. Alou spent 17 seasons in the National League with seven different teams from 1990-2008, including the 2002-04 seasons with Chicago... Well before that, in 1985, Alou's father, Felipe, managed the Indianapolis Indians. That summer, while Moisés was 19, he took classes at Marion College and trained with his dad's team. Moisés then played for the Indians himself in 1990 before being called up to the majors
BASEBALL'S A SMALL WORLD: Speaking of Felipe Alou, he went on to manage the Expos from 1992-2001. From 1996-99, TinCaps manager Francisco Morales played in Montreal's organization. At the same time, Fort Wayne hitting coach Lance Burkhart was drafted by the Expos in '97 and played three years in their system.
THE OTHER GUYS: South Bend's roster features the following Top 30 Chicago prospects according to MLB.com: No. 6 Gleyber Torres (SS), No. 12 Jake Stinnett (RHP), and No. 28 Trevor Clifton (RHP).
