Sporting KC Renews Rivalry with Houston on Saturday

April 24, 2015 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Sporting Kansas City News Release

Sporting Kansas City will visit BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday to face the Houston Dynamo in the team's second of a two-game road trip. The match will be televised locally on 38 the Spot and across the Midwest on SKCTV with pregame coverage beginning at 7 p.m. CT.

The recent rivalry between these two teams first came to fruition in 2011 when the Houston Dynamo eliminated Sporting KC from the playoff race in the Eastern Conference Championship at Sporting Park. A year later, the Dynamo again knocked Sporting KC out in the semifinal round on their way to a second straight MLS Cup appearance.

In 2013, Sporting KC snapped the Dynamo's 36-game home unbeaten streak -- the longest such streak in MLS history in all competitions. The defeat also gave Houston their first loss in BBVA Compass Stadium since its opening. Later that same year, Sporting KC defeated the Dynamo in the Eastern Conference Championship en route to hoisting the MLS Cup trophy.

After splitting results in two meetings a year ago, Sporting Kansas CIty has just one loss in their last seven MLS matches against Houston (3-1-3) and has recorded four straight clean sheets at BBVA Compass Stadium (2-0-2) dating back to 2012. The 375-minute shutout streak at BBVA Compass Stadium is the longest away shutout streak in club history at any opponent and is also Houston's longest drought all-time in which the team has been held scoreless at home against any opponent.

Sporting KC and Houston are currently tied for fifth place in Western Conference standings with identical 2-2-3 records after seven matches. Saturday marks the first of three meetings between these sides this season after both clubs were moved to the Western Conference prior to the 2015 season.

Last weekend, Sporting KC dropped a 2-1 decision at the LA Galaxy when Omar Gonzalez tallied a game-winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Krisztian Nemeth scored Sporting KC's lone goal in the match with Benny Feilhaber earning his League-leading fifth assist.

Houston has conceded just one goal in four home matches this season (2-1-1) and leads all MLS teams with a 0.57 goals against average. U.S. international and team captain Brad Davis boasts 27 game-winning assists at home, most in MLS history.

Sporting Kansas will be without center back Erik Palmer-Brown (international duty) on Saturday, while Nemeth (right hip bursitis) and Chance Myers (left Achilles) are listed as questionable on the injury report. The Dynamo should have a full squad available, only listing Honduran international Boniek Garcia as probable with a left knee sprain.

In-game updates will be available online at SportingKC.com/GameOn, via Twitter at @SKCGameday (English) and @SoySporting (Spanish) or through Sporting Club Uphoria.
