When scheduled starting pitcher Tanner Peters was a late scratch, the RockHounds were forced to "pitch by committee" in the opener of their four-game series with San Antonio, Thursday night at Security Bank Ballpark. The 'Hounds earned the victory, with the "committee," while outstanding, showed a flair for the dramatic. The RockHounds took a 5-1 lead into the ninth before denying a Missions rally that saw the game end with a 5-4 final score and the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position.

The RockHounds took a 2-0 lead in the second on Chad Oberacker's two-run double, and answered San Antonio's single run in the third by scoring twice in fourth on RBI's from Bruce Maxwell and Jaycob Brugman. When Matt Olson (3-for-4) scored on a wild pitch in the fifth, after leading off with a double, the run would ultimately provide the final margin of victory.

Kris Hall started in Peters' place and went the first three innings, allowing one run on two hits. Jim Fuller, who entered the game with an earned run average of 25.44 (three appearances), was outstanding in earning the win. The left-hander went four innings and faced the minimum number of batters (12), allowing just a bunt single, one which was quickly wiped away on a nicely-turned double play by (shortstop) Chad Pinder, (second baseman) Colin Walsh and (first baseman) Olson.

The Missions scored in the ninth on a walk, a ground out and two wild pitches from Bobby Wahl, but the 'Hounds' lead was still 5-2 with the bases empty and two out. An uncharacteristic error by Olson was followed by three consecutive hits, with RBI's by Alberth Martinez and Travis Jankowski making the score 5-4, with runners at second and third. Trea Turner then flew out to right fielder Josh Whitaker to end the game.

Kibbles & Bits

- Jaycob Brugman continued his remarkable turnaround and torrid hitting. The former BYU star entered Monday's double-header (at Arkansas) with two hits in 25 at bats for the season. After going 3-for-6 with an RBI double in the double-dip and followed that with a 3-for-5 night in Tuesday's 'Hounds win. In the series opener with San Antonio, Jaycob went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run, an RBI and a stolen base. Since the 2-for-25 start, Brugman is now 9-for-15 (.600) in his last four games, with three doubles, a triple, and three RBI.

- Chad Oberacker extended his on-base streak to 12 games, going 1-for-4 with a two-run double. "Obie" is hitting .421, two points behind Tulsa's Corey Seager (the Los Angeles Dodgers' # 1 prospect) in the Texas League, and leads the league in slugging (.737) and on-base percentage (.489). His 12 RBI are also a team high.

- Kris Hall, Jim Fuller and Tucker Healy went a combined eight innings, allowing one run on three hits and four walks, with seven strikeouts.

- The RockHounds won their third straight game overall, and snapped a four-game home losing streak.

- While the "whiff rate" declined a bit Thursday night, the RockHounds and their opponents have now struck out a combined 89 batters in the last 39-and-a-half innings (an average of more than one strikeout every half-inning).

- Thursday's games marked the start of division play (the first dozen games of the Texas League season are North versus South) and the start of a stretch in which the clubs will play 38 games in 39 days. Corpus Christi (9-4) was an 8-2 winner at Frisco, meaning the RockHounds (6-7) are now alone in second place (three games back), with Frisco and San Antonio (5-8) four games behind the Hooks.

- The 'Hounds are home through next Thursday (April 30). San Antonio provides the opposition Friday and Saturday evenings (7:00) with the series finale Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. Division-leading Corpus Christi then comes to town for a four-game set opening Monday.
