Chihuahuas Chase Cats to Their Fourth Straight Loss

April 23, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Sacramento River Cats News Release

EL PASO, Texas - The El Paso Chihuahuas wasted no time taking a lead over the Sacramento River Cats for the third night in a row. Sacramento's starter Austin Fleet surrendered a lead-off home run to El Paso's Rymer Liriano and the Chihuahuas never looked back.

Right-hander Austin Fleet made his second start for Sacramento looking to follow up on his perfect four-inning performance last week in Salt Lake. That perfection quickly ended as the first batter he faced, El Paso's right fielder Rymer Liriano, drove a 2-0 fastball out to left field, giving the Chihuahuas an immediate 1-0 lead.

El Paso added four more in the second inning on RBI-singles by Taylor Lindsey and Liriano, an RBI-double from center fielder Abraham Almonte, and an RBI-triple from Chihuahuas first baseman Tommy Medica. A run in the third on a Cody Decker single and another on Liriano's second solo home run in the fifth would be all the scoring El Paso needed on the night, giving them a 7-1 lead they would not relinquish. Fleet was responsible for all seven of the Chihuahuas' runs, giving up nine hits and one walk while striking out one.

The River Cats scattered eight hits across nine innings and pushed across three runs. Brett Jackson doubled to lead off the first and advanced to third on Ronny Cedeno's groundout. John Bowker followed Cedeno with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. They scored another in the seventh on a wild pitch by Chihuahua reliever Cory Mazzoni. Their third run of the night came in the eighth when Bowker singled and Adam Duvall knocked him in with a double.

Again, the bullpen was solid for the River Cats. Juan Gutierrez and Steven Okert combined for four scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and striking out four.

The loss is the fourth in a row for Sacramento and their longest losing streak since they dropped five in a row (5/2-6) last year. Over these last four games, the team is hitting just .171 (7/41) with runners in scoring position. The River Cats have been putting men on base, having posted a .270 average throughout the losing streak, but have been failing to convert the baserunners into runs.

Tomorrow's finale with El Paso is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. PDT. Sacramento will look to snap their current four game skid behind RHP Robert Coello (2-0, 2.65). Opposing him will be El Paso's LHP Jason Lane (1-1, 6.35).
