Winston-Salem Dash News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (April 23, 2015) - The Winston-Salem Dash permitted five unearned runs in their 6-0 loss to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in the first of a four-game series at TicketReturn.com Field on Thursday night.
The turning point in the game proved to be a costly error in the bottom of the fifth with the Pelicans in front 1-0 thanks to a second-inning RBI double from Jacob Hannemann. Myrtle Beach (9-4) loaded the bases with two down against Dash starter Jace Fry (0-3). Fry induced a bouncing ball to shortstop Jake Peter, but Peter threw wide to first base. This error chased home a pair of Pelicans runs to make it 3-0.
Fry exited the contest after this defensive miscue, and Tyler Barnette inherited a pair of runners. Both men came around on Ben Carhart's double to right-center field, which capped a four-run inning that put the game out of reach.
Myrtle did add another unearned run in the sixth inning against Barnette, the first unearned run charged to a Dash reliever this season. In all, Winston-Salem (4-9) committed a season-high three errors.
Offensively, the Dash could not handle Myrtle Beach starter Daury Torrez (2-1), who befuddled Winston-Salem over seven innings. The right-hander scattered four hits, three of which came off the bat of Adam Engel. Excepting Engel, Winston posted a combined 1-for-21 evening against Torrez, who defeated the Dash for the second time in six days.
Both Michael Heesch and Jasvir Rakkar spun a scoreless inning behind Torrez to complete the shutout, the first for the Dash's offense on the season.
Thus, the Dash's modest two-game win streak is over. Winston-Salem has lost nine of its last 11 games at Myrtle Beach dating back to last season, and the Dash are 0-4 against their division rivals thus far this year.
Winston-Salem aims to even the series on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Robinson Leyer (0-2, 5.23 ERA), the club's leader with 13 strikeouts, takes to the hill for his third High-A start. Fellow righty Duane Underwood (2-0, 0.82 ERA) opposes for Myrtle Beach. Underwood took a no-hitter into the seventh inning at BB&T Ballpark this past Saturday in the opener of a doubleheader.
Pregame coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn App. The game is also available on MiLB.tv, with the Myrtle Beach audio broadcast over the video.
The Dash return home Tuesday for a three-game series with the Potomac Nationals. The fun begins with the first All-You-Can-Eat Night of the season. Fans in attendance will enjoy All-You-Can-Eat hot dogs, hamburgers and cheeseburgers through the seventh inning, and normal ticket prices apply. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
