Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, Iowa (April 22, 2015) - The Iowa Cubs (6-7) lost 6-3 in game two of a four-game series with the New Orleans Zephyrs (5-8), as three I-Cubs pitchers combined to walk a season-high 10 batters.

Left-hander Hunter Cervenka (0-1) took the loss in his second appearance with the I-Cubs, surrendering three runs on three hits and four walks in 1.2 innings of work. Cervenka came on in relief for rehabbing left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada who went 5.1 innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out five. Normally known for his control, Wada also had difficulties finding the strike zone, walking four.

Despite being saddled with a blown save, right-hander Ryan Chaffee (1-0) would steal the win after coming into the game in the bottom of the sixth. Left-hander Adam Conley started for the Z's and went 5.2 innings while allowing three unearned runs.

The Z's drew first blood for the second straight game, going ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning on a Justin Bour RBI-single to left field that was knocked down by the wind, falling in front of left fielder John Andreoli.

Wada would allow his second of two earned runs in the top of the third as right fielder Cole Gillespie drove in centerfielder Austin Wates on an RBI-double to center.

Chaffee allowed two hits that would plate two unearned runs to Conley's name in the bottom of the sixth, giving the I-Cubs the brief 3-2 lead. Iowa's scoring was ignited by a fly ball off the bat of Andreoli which landed for a double in left field to lead off the sixth. The circus continued when second baseman Arismendy Alcantara reached on an error by Gillespie who had a fly ball glance off of his mitt, causing Andreoli to score. First baseman Jonathan Mota singled to right, driving in Alcantara before right fielder Junior Lake doubled off the base of the right field wall to give the I Cubs their third run.

The Zephyrs then responded with three runs of their own in the top of the seventh, going ahead 5-3, a lead they would never relinquish. Cervenka walked three batters in the inning and uncorked a wild pitch, allowing shortstop Miguel Rojas to score. Catcher Vinny Rottino came through with the eventual game winning, two-RBI single later that inning.

New Orleans tacked on an insurance run off of left-handed reliever Joseph Ortiz in the top of the ninth. Righty Carter Capps earned the seven-out save, striking out five in the effort.

The I-Cubs were lead at the plate by Lake who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Mota who collected his fourth multi-hit game this season, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Rottino and Gillespie both went 3-for-4, and Rojas posted a 2-for-4 day while scoring two runs.

The I-Cubs will host the New Orleans Zephyrs in game three of a four-game series on Wednesday, with a first pitch set for 12:08 p.m. CT at Principal Park. The game can be heard live on AM 940, 104.5 FM, and live streamed at Iowacubs.com. The On-Deck Circle Pre-game Show will begin 6:10 p.m. CT.
