Shark Snap Shot: The Worcester Sharks (41-29-4-2, 86pts) chomped two out of a possible six points in three games last week to close out the regular season. The Sharks began the week on Friday with a 5-2 win in Providence to clinch a spot in the Calder Cup playoffs for the first time since 2010. Worcester fell 4-2 in Manchester on Saturday night before returning home for the final regular season Sharks game ever at the DCU Center on Sunday. The Sharks lost 5-4 to the Portland Pirates in front of 6,245 fans at the DCU Center to close out the regular season schedule.
Worcester finished in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division with 88 points (41-29-4-2) and 7th overall in the Eastern Conference. The Sharks were 31-17-2-2 in their last 51 games. Highlights from the week include Chris Tierney racking up five points (1-4-5) in two games in his return from San Jose to the Worcester lineup. Barclay Goodrow picked up four points (1-3-4) in two games while Nikolay Goldobin added three points (2-1-3) in three games for the Sharks. Rylan Schwartz had a point in all three games (1-2-3) and Matt Tennyson grabbed three points (1-2-3) from the blue line. Matt Taormina was the only player to play in all 76 games for Sharks and also had three points (2-1-3) last week. Travis Oleksuk chipped in with two points (1-1-2) and Gus Young scored the last Worcester Sharks regular season goal at the DCU Center vs. the Pirates on Sunday.
The AHL announced on Jan 30 that the Worcester Sharks are to move to San Jose, CA after the season and join a new Pacific Division for the 2015-16 season. More information can be found by clicking HERE.
TRANSACTIONS:
San Jose Sharks 2nd round draft pick (46th) from 2014 defenseman Julius Bergman was reassigned by San Jose from London (OHL) to Worcester on April 17. Bergman made his professional debut on Apr 18 at Manchester. Julius had 42 points (13-29-42) in 60 games for the Knights.
POW:
The Worcester Sharks player of the week nominee is rookie Chris Tierney. The 20-year-old from Keswick, Ontario recorded five points (1-4-5) in two games last week. Tierney average a point per game this season for the Worcester Sharks - 29pts in 29gp.

MILESTONE ALERT:
Head Coach Roy Sommer surpassed Frank Mathers (1256 games coached) for the most games coached in AHL history on March 26, 2014 in the Sharks 5-3 win in Lewiston, ME over the Portland Pirates. Coach Sommer has coached 1344 AHL games - all with the SJ Sharks AHL affiliates. In total, Coach Sommer has been a head coach in 1,680 games in the AHL and ECHL. Roy surpassed John Paddock (589) for the 3rd most wins in AHL history in the Sharks 3-1 win in Providence on Jan 4, 2015. Coach Sommer picked up his 600th career AHL win in a 4-3 victory in Lehigh Valley on Feb 4, 2015 and surpassed Frank Mathers (610 wins) for 2nd all-time in AHL history on March 27 in Springfield with his 611th win!
Forward John McCarthy has 151 points (63-88-151) and surpassed Dan DaSilva (144pts) for the franchise lead in points on March 11 in Bridgeport. J-Mac has played 277 games with the Worcester Sharks - tied with Nick Petrecki (277gp) for the most in franchise history.

* AHL rookie Jeremy Langlois had 26 points (16-10-26) in 42 games. His 16 goals were most among AHL rookies before his injury. - Langlois is currently sidelined with a foot injury and has missed the last 32 games.
* AHL rookie Evan Trupp ranked 17th among AHL rookies with 40 points (16-24-40) in 72 games - Trupp was 2nd among all Worcester skaters with 40 points.
* Melker Karlsson was impressive with the San Jose Sharks. Melker finished with 24 points (13-11-24) in 53 games with San Jose since his recall on Dec 8. He scored his 1st NHL goal on Dec 22 at Anaheim and also had a five game goal scoring streak!
* Daniil Tarasov ranked 6th on Worcester with 33 points (16-17-33) in 54 games this season. Daniil made his NHL debut on Feb 5 and recorded an assist on Chris Tierney's first NHL goal. Tarasov has played five games for San Jose this season (0-1-1) and is currently with the Worcester Sharks.
* Freddie Hamilton was traded to the Colorado Avalanche for Karl Stollery on March 2. Freddie had 30 points (9-21-30) in 52 games for Worcester and played one game for the SJ Sharks this season (0-0-0). Hamilton Finished his career in Worcester with 99 points (44-55-99) in 191 games.
* Matt Taormina finished 1st among Worcester d-men with 38 points (11-27-38) in 76 games (12th in AHL). Matt picked up his 100th AHL assist vs. the Monarchs on Dec 26 and was selected to play in the AHL All Star Classic where he collected two assists. Taormina is the only player on the Sharks to play in all 76 games this season and skated in his 300th AHL game on April 3 at WBS.
* Taylor Fedun ranked 2nd among Worcester defensemen in points (34) and 3rd on the club with 27 assists in 65 games. - Fedun ranked 18th in the AHL in points among defensemen at the time of his recall by the SJ Sharks on March 28 and made his SJ Sharks debut on March 29 in Pittsburgh. Fedun had four points (0-4-4) in seven games for the SJ Sharks before he was loaned back to Worcester on April 12.
* Micheal Haley was 1st on the club in goals (18), led the club in fighting majors (10), and tops in penalty minutes (106). Haley picked up his 1,000th AHL penalty minute on Dec 13 and has also played four games with the San Jose Sharks this season. Haley led Worcester in power play goals (8) and 2nd on the team lead in game winners (4).
* Defenseman Matt Tennyson played in 43 games in Worcester (4-11-15) and 27 games with the SJ Sharks (2-6-8) this season. - Tenny is currently with the Worcester Sharks.
* Captain Bryan Lerg ranked 1st on the Sharks with 41 points (13-28-41) in 68 games this season for Worcester. Lerg also was tied for the team lead with 172 shots on goal and 2nd on the club with four game winning goals. - Lerg received his first NHL recall on April 5 and scored his 1st NHL goal in his NHL debut on April 9 at Edmonton. - Lerg was voted the Sharks MVP of the season.
* Goaltender Troy Grosenick finished with a 20-13-3 record in Worcester with a 2.63 GAA and a .906 save %. Grosenick made his NHL debut on Nov 16 and set an NHL record for most saves in a shutout by a goaltender making his NHL debut (45) in the SJ Sharks 2-0 win at Carolina. Troy went 1-1-0 in two starts for the SJ Sharks and is currently in Worcester.
* Goaltender Aaron Dell inked his 1st NHL Deal with the SJ Sharks on Feb 28. Dell went 15-8-2 with Worcester this season with a 2.06 GAA and a .929save %. Dell ranked 5th in the AHL in GAA and 4th in save % and was voted the Sharks Rookie of the Year.
* Game Winners - rookie Ryan Carpenter led the Sharks with five game winning goals this season!
* The Worcester Sharks were the least penalized team in the AHL with only 10.64 penalty minutes per game and were shorthanded the least (251) in the AHL.

4.17.15 - Providence 2 - Worcester 5- W - Dunkin Donuts Center- Providence, RI The Worcester Sharks (41-27-4-2, 88pts) clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2010 with an impressive 5-2 win over the host Providence Bruins (40-25-7-2, 89pts) in front of 8,739 fans at the Dunkin Donuts Center on Friday evening. With the win, the Sharks remain in 7th place in the Eastern Conference with two games remaining in the regular season. Chris Tierney (1-2-3) and Barclay Goodrow (0-2-2) had multipoint games for Worcester while Troy Grosenick made 25 saves for his 20th win of the season. Matt Taormina (10th), Rylan Schwartz (5th), Daniil Tarasov (16th), and Matt Tennyson (4th) also scored for Worcester in a physical contest that featured three fights. The Sharks finished with a 46-46-10 in 102 career matchups vs. the Providence Bruins all-time.
4.18.15 - Manchester 4 - Worcester 2 - L - Verizon Wireless Arena - Manchester, NH The Worcester Sharks (41-28-4-2, 88pts) dropped their final regular season road game of the season in a 4-2 loss to the host Manchester Monarchs (50-16-6-3, 109pts) in front 9,132 fans at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday evening. With the loss, the Sharks remain in 7th place in the Eastern Conference with one game remaining in the regular season. Rookie Nikolay Goldobin scored twice for Worcester while Troy Grosenick made 34 saves in net. Manchester scored three times in the first period and picked up their 50th win of the season as goaltender JF Berube made 28 saves in net for the win. The Sharks finished with a 19-16-2-1 record on the road this season.
4.19.15 - Portland 5 - Worcester 4 - L - DCU Center- Worcester, MA The Worcester Sharks (41-29-4-2, 88pts) dropped a close game to the Portland Pirates (39-28-7-2, 88pts) in front of 6,242 fans at the DCU Center on Fan Appreciation Day on Sunday afternoon, as this marked the last regular season game that the Sharks will play at the DCU Center before heading to San Jose. With the loss, the Sharks take the 7th place spot in the Eastern Conference in the final game of the season and will play the Hershey Bears in the first round of the Calder Cup playoffs. Portland's right winger Henrik Samuelsson (2-1-3, +3) led the way for the Pirates in the 5-4 victory that put them into the playoffs. Four Worcester players, including Travis Oleksuk (1-0-1, E), Matt Taormina (1-1-2, E), Barclay Goodrow (1-1-2, -1), and Gus Young (1-0-1, E), scored goals in the loss. After replacing Louis Domingue in net, Pirates' Mike McKenna made 7 saves on 7 shots for his 27th win of the season. Portland outshot Worcester 39-25 in the victory. Both teams are now headed to the Calder Cup Playoffs, which begin on Friday at the DCU Center.

The Worcester Sharks (41-29-4-2, 88pts in 73gp) finished in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division; which was 21 points behind the 1st place Monarchs (109pts in 76gp), three points behind the 2nd place Bruins (91pts in 76gp), one point ahead of the 4th place Pirates (87pts in 76gp), and 13 points ahead of the 5th place IceCaps (75pts in 76gp) to round out a very choppy Atlantic Division.

*AHL POW... The American Hockey League announced that Worcester Sharks left wing Bryan Lerg has been selected as the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Mar. 22, 2015. Lerg scored five goals - including two game-winners - in three games last week as the Sharks continued to bid for a berth in the Eastern Conference playoffs. On March 18, Lerg scored twice in the third period of Worcester's 3-2 loss to Hershey, his first two-goal game since Oct. 23, 2012. He repeated the performance on March 20, this time striking twice in the first period to pace the Sharks to a 3-1 win over St. John's. And on March 21, Lerg scored again to help Worcester to a 6-1 victory over Lehigh Valley, his fifth goal in three games after having scored five in his previous 30 contests. After seeing his previous two seasons cut short by injury, Lerg has recorded 13 goals and 25 assists for a team-leading 38 points in 61 games this season for Worcester, which finished the week one point out of eighth place in the Eastern Conference with games in hand on the rest of the field. The Sharks captain and seventh-year pro has totaled 89 goals and 103 assists for 192 points in 341 career AHL games with Worcester, Lake Erie, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Springfield. A native of Livonia, Mich., Lerg was signed as a free agent with San Jose on July 10, 2014. In recognition of his achievement, Lerg will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Sharks home game. Lerg joins Tim Kennedy, Tommy Wingels, and Thomas Greiss as the only four players in the nine year history of the Sharks to be named the AHL Player of the Week.
*Ring in the New Year!... the Sharks were 28-16-1-1 in the calendar year of 2015!
*NEW PLAYER... The Sharks signed forward Daniel Ciampini to an AHL contract for the remainder of the 2014-15 season on Mar 18. Ciampini, 24, led Union College in goals (26), while ranking 2nd in the nation in that category and tied Union College's single-season record points record (26-24-50) this season. In addition, he led the Dutchmen in shots (126), plus/minus (+21), power play goals (9), and game winning goals (5) in his 39 games as a senior. The Concord, Ontario native finished his career at Union College with 118pts in 131 games and was a member of the 2014 National Championship Team. The 5-11, 185lb forward made his professional debut with the Worcester Sharks on March 18 and had six points (3-3-6) in 15 games with Worcester.
*NEW PLAYER Take 2... The Sharks signed forward Matt Willows to an ATO on March 24. Willows scored 19 goals and added 16 assists as a senior at UNH this season. The native of Congers, NY scored in his professional debut for Worcester in the 6-3 victory in Springfield on March 27. Matt had five points (3-2-5) in 11 games for the Worcester Sharks.
*NEW PLAYER Take 3.... Defenseman Joakim Ryan signed an ATO with Worcester on March 23 and an NHL contract with San Jose on April 24. Ryan was drafted by the SJ Sharks in 2012 (198th overall in 2012) and recently concluded a stellar four-year career at Cornell, earning three All-Ivy League and two All-ECAC Hockey selections. He accumulated 78 career points on 19 goals and 59 assists in 123 career games, giving him the most offensive output from a Big Red defenseman since longtime NHLer Doug Murray (84 points) and Mark McRae (98 points) finished their careers during the 2002-03 season. An injury in the Big Red's first game of the season forced Ryan to miss all eight of the team's November games, but he was nothing short of terrific the rest of the campaign. The Big Red penalty kill was the nation's best (91.1 percent) at the end of its regular season, with Ryan being a major contributor. He was also a key puck-mover on the Big Red power play, which ranked tied for first in league games with a 20.3 percent success rate. Despite missing six league games, Ryan still ranked tied for fourth in points among defensemen for a team that averaged just 2.05 goals per game in league play. Ryan was named to the All-Ivy First Team in 2014 and 2015, and the All-Ivy Second Team in 2013. He was also named to the All-ECAC Hockey First Team in 2015 and the Second Team in 2014, following which led to a career-high 24 points. Ryan was also one of three finalists for the 2015 ECAC Hockey Best Defensive Defenseman Award and a nominee for the 2014 Hobey Baker Award, which is given annually to the NCAA's best college hockey player. Ryan made his pro debut on April 3 at WBS and had two points (0-2-2) in seven games with Worcester.
*Goldobin... Nikolay Goldobin was reassigned to Worcester on April 2.Goldobin registered 21 points (11 goals, 10 assists) and 12 penalty minutes during 38 regular season games with HIFK. In addition, he helped lead the team to a playoff appearance where he picked up five points (one goal, four assists) in seven games. Goldobin also took part in the inaugural Champions Hockey League tournament with HIFK, posting four points (one goal, three assists) in three games. Prior to his stint with HIFK, Goldobin played for the Sarnia Sting in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) during the 2013-14 season. The 18-year-old forward recorded 94 points (38 goals, 56 assists) and 21 penalty minutes in 67 games, leading Sarnia in scoring while ranking seventh amongst all OHL players in points. He strung together a 22-game point streak from Nov. 14, 2013 to Jan. 11, 2014, registering 43 points (21 goals, 22 assists) and three four-point performances during that span. In 2012-13, Goldobin was the runner-up for the OHL Rookie of the Year award and was named to the OHL All-Rookie Second Team, posting 68 points (30 goals, 38 assists) in 68 games with the Sting, totals that ranked first amongst all OHL rookies in both goals and points.
Internationally, Goldobin represented his home country of Russia at the 2015 World Junior Championship where he registered five points (two goals, three assists) in seven games, helping the team secure a silver medal. In addition, he took part in the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament, registering three points (one goal, two assists) in four games. The five-foot-eleven, 180-pound native of Moscow, Russia was originally drafted by San Jose in the first-round (27th overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft. Nikolay had five points (3-2-5) in nine games for Worcester.
*TRADE.... The San Jose Sharks traded Freddie Hamilton for defenseman Karl Stollery on March 2. Stollery had 14pts (5-9-14) in 46 games this season for Lake Erie along with five games (0-0-0) with the Colorado Avalanche. Stollery is a product of Merrimack College and is in his 3rd season of professional hockey hailing from Camrose, Alberta. Stollery had five points (2-4-6) in 14 games for Worcester and played five games (0-0-0) with San Jose.
*TRADE X2... the Worcester Sharks acquired forward Vincent Arseneau on March 9 from the Manchester Monarchs for future considerations. Arseneau, 22, has posted 14 points (9-5-14) and 132 penalty minutes in 37 games with the Ontario Reign and the Indy Fuel of the ECHL this season. Vincent played 24 games with Lake Erie (AHL) in 2012-14 and posted one assist along with 95 penalty minutes. He also skated in 47 games with Denver (CHL) in 2013-14 and posted 37 points (24-13-37) and 120 penalty minutes in 47 games. The 6-foot-2, 200lb left winger from Iles-de-la-Madeleine, PQ played with Acadie-Bathurst and Shawingan in the QMJHL and made his Sharks debut on March 11. Arseneau was loaned to Allen (ECHL) on March 23 after appearing in two scoreless games for Worcester.
*Top Rookie!... Evan Trupp finished 17th among all AHL rookies with 40pts (16-24-40) in 72 games.

The Worcester Sharks (41-29-4-2, 88pts) are the number 7 seed and will play the number 2 seed and East Division Champion Hershey Bears (46-22-5-3, 100pts) beginning with Game 1 at the DCU Center on Friday, April 24 at 7pm.

This will be the first ever playoff matchup between the Sharks and the Hershey Bears. Worcester went 2-2-0-0 vs. the Bears in the regular season.
Worcester Sharks full season ticket holders will receive tickets for the first round of the playoffs for free. Flex Pack holders will receive a free pair of tickets for the first home game of the playoffs.
