5-Run Sixth Leads Redbirds to 7-2 Victory
April 22, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Memphis Redbirds News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - The sixth inning was all the Redbird offense needed to put the Storm Chasers away at Werner Park during Wednesday's matinee. The five-run frame was led by a pair of triples from Memphis infielders Greg Garcia (2-3, 3B, 3 RBI) and Matt Williams (1-3, 3B, 2 RBI).
Tim Cooney (2-1, 3.63) earned his second win of the season, behind a 5.0 inning performance, which saw the southpaw strike out eight Omaha batters. The only blemish on Cooney's day came in the third inning, after an errant throw by Ty Kelly, which would have retired the side for the Redbirds.
After being shut down for the first five innings, the Memphis offense turned on Omaha in the top of the sixth inning. After a pair of walks delivered to Cody Stanley (0-3, 2 R, 2 BB) and Scott Moore (0-4, R, BB), coupled with a single off the bat of Stephen Piscotty (3-5, 2B, 2 RBI), Greg Garcia brought all three of his teammates home on the shortstop's first triple of the season.
Ed Easley (0-3, R, BB) was then intentionally walked by Omaha pitcher Buddy Baumann to set up a double play opportunity. After a Mike O'Neill (0-3, BB) fly-out, Matt Williams delivered a two-RBI triple of his own, extending the Redbird lead to three.
Memphis added two more in the ninth inning, courtesy of a Stephen Piscotty double, scoring Ty Kelly (0-4, R, BB) and Cody Stanley, who reached on a pair of walks.
The Redbird bullpen was able to shut down the Storm Chaser offense, preserving the victory for Cooney. Tossing 2.0 innings, Miguel Socolovich (0-0, 0.00) extended his scoreless streak to 9.0 innings to start the 2015 season. Sam Tuivailala (0-0, 0.00) pitched a perfect eighth inning, with Nick Greenwood (1-0, 10.13) retiring the Storm Chasers in order to finish off the Redbirds' victory. The Memphis bullpen retired the final 11 Omaha batters in order.
The Redbirds and Storm Chasers continue their series at 6:35 (CT) Thursday evening from Werner Park. Left-hander Tyler Lyons (1-1, 3.60) will be on the hill for Memphis.
