Missions Walk-Off on Wild Pitch
April 22, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release
San Antonio walked-off Springfield 4-3 Monday night at Wolff Stadium on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth.
Monday night's contest, for awhile, was a classic Wolff pitchers' duel as San Antonio's Justin Hancock and Springfield's Nick Petree traded zeroes over the first four innings.
Petree allowed only one hit through those four innings, but in the fifth, gave up the game's first run due to sloppy defense.
The inning began with Alberth Martinez lifting a high fly to deep left. Springfield left fielder Anthony Garcia struggled to get under the ball and could not make the catch, allowing a hustling Martinez to advance all the way to third. Petree shook off the tough break in the field to retire next batter, Jason Hagerty. However, during the next at-bat, Martinez was able to steal home on a botched squeeze play involving newcomer Rey Bruguera (arrived Sunday from High-A Lake Elsinore).
San Antonio added two more unearned runs against Petree in the frame courtesy of singles by Travis Jankowski and Trea Turner, who both extended their team-high hit streaks to eight games.
Unfortunately for Missions, the lead was short lived as David Washington took Hancock deep in the top of the sixth for a game-tying, three-run homer to right.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the ninth when San Antonio loaded the bases on reliever Joey Donofrio (0-2) with just one out thanks to a Hagerty walk and singles by both Bruguera (first Double-A hit) and Yeison Asencio. Springfield called to the bullpen and brought in lefty Justin Wright, whose first pitch bounced in the dirt past catcher Michael Ohlman, allowing Hagerty to scamper home with the winning run.
Brandon Alger (2-0) earned the win in relief after a scoreless top of the ninth.
San Antonio (5-6) wraps up its season-opening homestand Tuesday against Springfield (3-8), with first pitch slated for 7:05 PM. It will be Wolff Stadium's first $2 Tuesday of the season, a night that now features $2 tacos. Colin Rea (0-1, 1.32) will take the hill for the Missions, while the Cards counter with fellow righty Mike Mayers (0-2, 14.21).
