Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After losing a late lead Monday night to Pensacola, the Barons used a couple of four-run innings to overcome a 3-0 deficit to the Blue Wahoos Tuesday night at Regions Field. The first three hitters in the Birmingham order were a combined 6-for-14 with Jacob May, Tim Anderson and Courtney Hawkins each recording two hits.

Mark Blackmar was handed the start and was roughed up for two runs on eight hits through 4.2 innings of work. B.J. Wendelken was brought on in the fifth, giving up a run on two hits as the Barons found themselves down 3-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Birmingham sticks came alive in the bottom of the sixth, putting the Barons on top 4-3 for their first lead of the night. Of the inning's five hits, back-to-back doubles from Anderson and Hawkins accounted for two runs. Christian Marrero and Jeremy Farrell each had a hit in the inning, as well, driving in the frame's other two runs.

The Barons repeated with four runs in the eighth on four hits. An RBI single from Danny Hayes plated the inning's first run, and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to Farrell scored the second. May and Anderson followed up with back-to-back hits to drive in the final two runs.

Pensacola threatened in the top of the ninth as left fielder and Reds No. 2 prospect Jesse Winker took reliever Nolan Sanburn deep to right, but that would prove to be the final run of the contest. Wendelken picked up the win - his first of the season - and Sanburn was credited with his second save.

With a 2-for-5 performance, Anderson extended his hitting streak to eight games. The shortstop has hit safely in 10 of the season's 11 games. His only hitless game came April 11 as Mobile held him 0-for-4. Farrell has also accumulated a hitting streak of his own, stringing together base-knocks over his last four contests.

The Barons are back in action Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at Regions Field. The early start makes Regions Field the perfect place to spend a lunch break away from the office, and AAA members will receive $2 off their ticket purchase when they present their AAA card at the Joe Drake Ticket Office. It is the third game of a five-game series against the Blue Wahoos.
