Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Despite leading from the third to the eighth inning, the Barons were unable to keep its advantage over the Blue Wahoos to fall 6-5 Monday night at Regions Field. The Birmingham pitching staff was tagged for six runs on 11 hits, while the bats produced five RBI and nine hits.

Pensacola drew first blood in the third inning on a couple of hits, but the Barons offense took off in the bottom half of the inning to score three runs on three hits. Third baseman Jeremy Farrell began the frame with a solo home run to right-center on an 1-0 pitch from Pensacola starting pitcher Robert Stephenson. Second baseman Joey DeMichele then tripled to left - one of the game's three triples - and shortstop Tim Anderson knocked him in on a single to shallow right-center. Anderson later scored on a sacrifice fly after stealing both second and third.

Just two batters in the Birmingham lineup did not record hits, and both Jason Coats and Courtney Hawkins registered two hits on the evening. Anderson was 1-for-4, extending his hitting streak to seven games, and Coats crossed home plate twice.

Both Birmingham and Pensacola plated a run in the fourth and sixth innings, but the Blue Wahoos began their comeback in the top of the seventh. With Miguel Chalas on in relief, three Wahoos hits brought home two runs. Raul Fernandez was brought on in the middle of the eighth to relieve Chalas and to stop the bleeding, but Pensacola was able to get a run on two hits off the right-hander. Chalas was charged with an earned run, but Fernandez was charged with the loss and blown save.

Pensacola reliever Carlos Gonzalez picked up the win while Ben Klimesh was credited with the save. Three Wahoos hitters posted multiple hits, and third baseman Seth Mejias-Brean reached base four times, going two-for-three with two walks.

The Barons are back in action Tuesday night as they host the Blue Wahoos for the second game of the five-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., and it is Social Media Night and 50-cent Hot Dog Night at Regions Field. Hot dogs are just 50-cents all night, and fans have the chance to win Barons prizes by interacting with the team on social media.
