Altherr, Fightin Phils Top RubberDucks 9-4
April 20, 2015 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Reading's Aaron Altherr slugged a three-run home run in the first inning and finished with four RBI in the game to lead the Fightin Phils to a 9-4 victory over the Akron RubberDucks Monday night at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Turning Point
The Fightin Phils (7-3) scored five runs in the sixth inning to snap a 4-4 tie. With two outs and a man on first, Akron righthander Will Roberts intentionally walked left-handed hitter Art Charles in order to face the righthanded Harold Martinez. Martinez, who entered the game hitting .417, responded with an RBI single to right to give Reading the lead, 5-4. Second baseman Tony Thomas followed with a two-run triple to straightaway center field off reliever Jordan Cooper, making it 7-4. Roman Quinn and KC Serna chipped in RBI singles before the side was finally retired.
Mound Presence
Roberts (1-1) was charged with seven runs in his first loss of the season. He yielded Altherr's three-run shot in the first after giving up a walk and single to the first two batters of the game. Altherr came up again in the third and smacked an RBI single to make it 4-2. Roberts gave up 10 hits on the night. Former Akron lefty Elvis Araujo, now a member of Philadelphia's 40-man roster after signing as a free agent, earned the win in relief after coming into the game to start the sixth inning. Araujo (1-1) tossed two scoreless innings and struck out a pair of hitters.
Duck Tales
Erik Gonzalez went 4-4, with an RBI for the RubberDucks (4-7). He stroked four singles, and raised his average to .262. Yonathan Mendoza blasted a two-run home run in the fifth inning that tied the game briefly, 4-4. It was the first AA homer for Mendoza and the first for the RubberDucks this season.
