Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
GREENSBORO, NC - Greensboro erased a 3-0 BlueClaws lead scoring eight unanswered runs to come back and top the BlueClaws 8-3 on Monday night at NewBridge Bank Park.
The Grasshoppers (6-5) won their 5th straight game to get back over .500 while the BlueClaws (5-7) dropped their third straight to fall two-games under .500 for the first time this year. The teams have split four meetings this year.
The BlueClaws jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead four batters into the game. After Malquin Canelo doubled to open the game, Carlos Tocci singled him with one out and Rhys Hoskins hit his first home run of the year to put the BlueClaws up 3-0. Hoskins' home run was his 10th as a professional after he hit nine with Williamsport in 2014.
Greensboro responded in the second inning off Elniery Garcia, scoring four times to take a lead they would not relinquish. Austen Smith started the inning with his 4th home run of the season. After Garcia got the next two outs, Brian Schales singled and Rony Cabrera tied the game with his second professional home run. Mason Davis would add an RBI
single to put Greensboro up 4-3.
The 'Hoppers would add a run in the 4th inning on an RBI single by Arturo Rodriguez, one in the 5th inning, and two in the 7th inning to complete the scoring.
Greensboro's Michael Mader settled in after the three-run first inning, getting through the 6th without allowing another run and earning his first win of the year (1-2). Mader retired the last 11 BlueClaws hitters that he faced. Luis Castillo got the last nine outs for Greensboro to earn his first save.
Lakewood starter Elniery Garcia (1-1) gave up five runs, four earned, over 3.1 innings to take the loss. Jason Zgardowski allowed one run in 2.2 innings and Joey DeNato allowed two runs over two innings in relief.
Hoskins and Canelo each had two hits for the BlueClaws. Mason Davis, Isael Soto, Brian Schales, Rony Cabrera, and Zach Sullivan all had two hits for Greensboro.
The three-game series continues on Tuesday night at 7:00. RHP Ricardo Pinto (0-0, 1.38) starts for the BlueClaws opposite RHP Jose Adames (0-0, 1.80).
