Chiefs Split Monday Doubleheader

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs and Wisconsin Timber Rattlers split a double header on Monday afternoon with the Chiefs losing 4-2 in game one and bouncing back to win 3-2 in game two. The win moves the Chiefs to 8-4 on the season and gives them the series win over Wisconsin with three games remaining on the homestand.

The Chiefs started game one of the doubleheader with a quick run in the first inning. Magneuris Sierra led off with a walk and Oscar Mercado was hit by a pitch. After Sierra was picked off second and Danny Diekroeger flew out, Mercado stole second, Justin Ringo walked, and Nick Thompson was hit by a pitch to load up the bases. Collin Radack came through with an RBI single, plating Mercado, but Thompson was thrown out at the plate to end the inning with the Chiefs up 1-0.

Chiefs starter Matt Pearce struck out the first two Rattlers of the third inning, but an error by Mercado kept the inning alive. Pearce walked the next two batters to load the bases. Dustin DeMuth drove home two with an RBI single and the third runner came around to score on an errant through by right fielder Blake Drake for a 3-1 Wisconsin lead.

The Chiefs cut the deficit to one in the fifth inning against Victor Diaz. Sierra led off with a single and reached third after a wild pitch and throwing error. Diekroeger drove Sierra home on an error to make it a 3-2 game.

Wisconsin increased their lead in the sixth. Nick Lomascolo hit the leadoff batter Elvis Rubio. And Rubio moved to third on an error by Mercado. Sthervin Matos drove home Rubio with a single off the wall to make it 4-2.

The Chiefs loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Steve Bean struck out to end game one with a 4-2 Chiefs loss.

Pearce (1-1) went 4 1/3 innings, allowed three unearned runs on three hits, two walks, and he struck out six. Nick Lomascolo relieved Pearce in the middle of the fifth and allowed one run on one hit, one walk, and he struck out two over 1 2/3 innings of work. Tyler Bray tossed a scoreless inning allowing three walks and striking out three.

Game Two- Wisconsin struck first in game two with two runs in the first inning. Gregory Munoz singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error by Luis Cruz. Brandon Diaz doubled home Munoz for the 1-0 lead and David Denson plated Diaz with a double of his own to make it 2-0.

The Chiefs got both runs back in the bottom of the inning. Diekroeger got things started with a two-out single. Diekroeger stole second and scored on a single by Nick Thompson. Alex DeLeon walked, and Cruz hit an RBI single to knot the game 2-2.

The Chiefs took the lead in the fifth inning against Cy Sneed. Andrew Sohn started the inning with a leadoff single, stole second and moved to third on a groundout by Mercado. Sohn scored on a fielding error by Luis Aviles to make it a 3-2 game.

Chiefs starter Will Anderson (2-0) went six innings, allowed two runs on three hits, no walks, and he struck out four. Reliever Robby Rowland yielded two hits and struck out two in an inning of work to earn the save.
