Springfield Cardinals News Release
San Antonio, TX - The Springfield Cardinals belted three home runs to power past the San Antonio Missions, 9-2, before 6,797 fans at Wolff Stadium on Sunday afternoon. RHP Andrew Morales, LHP Jonathan Cornelius and RHP Chris Thomas combined to retire 21 of the final 22 Missions to come up.
Cardinals RHP Andrew Morales (W, 1-0) and Missions RHP Dennis O'Grady alternated a pair of scoreless innings apiece, before the Missions (4-6) dealt the first blow in the bottom of the third. After CF Travis Jankowski led off with a walk, SS Trea Turner knocked a two-run home run to left field, swinging the Missions into the 2-0 advantage.
The Cardinals (3-7), though, responded right away in the top of the fourth. With one away and the bases empty, RF David Washington launched a solo blast off the batter's eye in center field for his first career Double-A home run. 1B Jonathan Rodriguez came up next and ripped a double to right field, followed quickly by a game-tying RBI single from LF Anthony Garcia, squaring the score at 2-2.
Morales kept the tie intact with a scoreless fourth and fifth inning, increasing his consecutive batters retired streak to nine. Springfield then swung in front in the top of the sixth with another long-ball. Washington kept the inning going with a two-out walk against RHP Casey Kelly (L, 0-2), before Rodriguez unloaded a towering two-run homer to left-center field for the 4-2 lead.
Morales logged another 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the sixth, finishing his outing with 12 straight Missions retired and only the two runs allowed, while striking out six. After the quick defensive frame, the Cardinals went right back on the attack in the top of the seventh against LHP Chris Nunn. With two on and two down, SS Alex Mejia lined a single to left field, plating both C Michael Ohlman and INF Aledmys Diaz from third and second, respectively. 2B Jacob Wilson stepped up to the plate next and launched a mammoth two-run home run to left field, his second blast of the year, increasing the lead to 8-2.
LHP Jonathan Cornelius kept the streak of consecutive outs going with a 1-2-3 seventh, making it 15 straight Missions put down. The Cardinals then tacked on one more insurance run in the top of the eighth against RHP Luis De La Cruz. Garcia led off with a single, before racing to third on a double from Ohlman. 3B Patrick Wisdom then skied an RBI sacrifice fly to right-center field, making it 9-2.
RHP Chris Thomas toed the rubber next for Springfield and notched the first two outs in the bottom of the eighth. However, Turner lined a two-out double, snapping the streak of 17 consecutive Missions retired by Cardinals hurlers. Thomas, though, retired the next four outs in a row, slamming the door on the Missions and closing the decisive 9-2 win for the Cardinals.
