Monarchs Close Season with 5-1 Loss to Bruins

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Monarchs surrendered the first four goals of the game and dropped the regular-season finale in Providence, 5-1. The loss snapped a nine-game point streak.

Manchester (50-16-6-3) finished the regular with a 50-17-6-3 record and 109 points, their third-most points ever in a single season. The Monarchs went 6-5-1-0 against Providence (40-26-7-2) in the regular season.

Sean Backman scored the Monarchs' lone goal today, it was his second point in as many games after picking up an assist last night.

The Bruins took an early 2-0 lead, scoring twice in just over thirty seconds in the first period. Cory Kane put Providence on the board at 2:30 and Tyler Randell doubled the lead at 3:07.

Rob Flick extended Providence's lead to 3-0 when he scored on a rebound opportunity at 16:41 in the first. It was his 19th goal of the season and came on the power play.

Colin Stewart took a pass from Frank Vatrano on a two-on-one and scored to make it 4-0 Bruins at 1:29 in the third.

Backman put the Monarchs on the board at 13:58 in the third period when he deflected a shot from Brian O'Neill in front of Malcolm Subban. It was his 19th goal of the year.

Ethan Werek scored the final goal of the game for Providence at 15:24 in the third period.

The Monarchs will face Portland in the first round of the Calder Cup Playoffs after the Pirates earned a 5-4 come-from-behind victory at Worcester today.

Notes:

The Monarchs finished the regular season with 176 goals allowed, tying the franchise record for fewest goals allowed in a single season (also, 2004-05). Jordan Weal (assist) extended his point streak to five straight games beginning on Apr. 3. He has two goals and five assists in that span. Manchester went 20-10-5-3 in road games this season versus 30-7-1-0 at home. The Kings announced today that Nick Shore has been assigned to Manchester.
