Wilmington Rallies Again to Take Series

April 19, 2015 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

WILMINGTON, Del. -For the second straight game the Blue Rocks rallied, scoring the final three runs of the game to top the Frederick Keys 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium. It marks the first time the Keys have suffered back-to-back losses this season. Despite the setback, the Keys still lead the CL North by a half-game.

Trailing by a run, the Blue Rocks tied the game in the seventh inning against Williams Louico. Retiring the first two batters, Louico jumped ahead in the count to Bubba Starling, but misfired on an 0-1 fastball which the Wilmington three-hole batter drove over the short wall in leftfield. It was one of Starling's two RBIs on the day.

Wilmington then employed small ball in the eighth to go on top. Zane Evans got hit by a pitch to open the inning, while Dominique Taylor came on to pinch run. A wild pitch by Louico (1-1) moved Taylor to second, who then advanced to third on a sac-bunt. Responsible for driving in the eventual go-ahead run on Saturday, Robert Pehl did the same thing on Sunday, with a sac-fly to rightfield. Louico was tagged with his first loss giving up two runs over two innings on one hit.

Frederick briefly took the lead in the sixth thanks to a two-out error by Blue Rocks shortstop Jack Lopez. On the play, Trey Mancini grounded a ball in the hole, but Lopez could not get his glove down in time to field it. Wilmington would make a pitching change going to Luis Rico to set up a lefty-lefty matchup with Drew Dosch. During the plate appearance, Rico threw a wild pitch to move Mancini to second before Dosch walked. That sent up Tucker Nathans who hit a hot shot past Frank Schwindel at first which rolled into the corner and scored both runs. It was Nathans' second multi-RBI game of the year, and his first three-hit effort (3-for-4).

That would be the offensive highlight of the day for the Keys, who also scored a fifth inning run on a sac-fly by Anthony Caronia. The Blue Rocks opened the scoring in the third with an RBI single by Starling which brought home Logan Moon who walked and got to second on a wild pitch.

Rico (1-0) earned the win in his second Carolina League appearance, surrendering one run on two hits over 3.1 innings. The southpaw walked three and struck out four.

The Keys continue their seven-game roadtrip on Monday night, when the team opens a three-game series with the Lynchburg Hillcats. Both sides have not announced their starters for Monday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. Pregame coverage begins at 6:15. Frederick returns home on Thursday, April 23 at 7:00 p.m. when the team hosts the Wilmington Blue Rocks. For ticket information, fans can contact the Keys at 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
