Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (APRIL 19, 2015) - The Chicago Cubs have promoted the first Pelicans player to Double-A. Myrtle Beach Pelicans right-handed pitcher Starling Peralta has been promoted to Double-A Tennessee. In a corresponding move, Class-A South Bend righty Jasvir Rakkar (pronounced JAZZ-veer rah-CAR) has been received by the Pelicans.
Peralta, 24, made three appearances for Myrtle Beach, most recently on Saturday in game one of a doubleheader at Winston-Salem. The hard-throwing right-hander tossed a scoreless inning in relief of Duane Underwood Jr., finishing off a 4-1 victory. In four innings of work this year, he allowed two runs, both earned, on five hits, struck out seven, and walked two. Peralta, who has spent at least parts of the last three seasons at the Class A-Advanced level, will be looking to make his Double-A debut with the Tennessee Smokies. Signed in 2008 as a non-drafted free agent, the native of the Dominican Republic is in his eighth professional season.
Rakkar, 23, also has made three outings thus far in 2015. He has no record with a 2.35 ERA, allowing four runs, two earned, in 7 2/3 innings of work for the Cubs' new Class-A affiliate in South Bend. He struck out eight Midwest League hitters and issued out just one walk. The Ontario, Canada, native played at four different levels a season ago, but spent most of his time at Class-A Kane County, where he went 3-1 with an 0.89 ERA in 12 outings out of the bullpen. Rakkar becomes the second Canadian-born player on the roster, joining Wes Darvill, who hails from British Columbia, Canada. Rakkar was selected by the Cubs in the 26th round of the 2012 draft out of Stony Brook University.
With the postponed game on Sunday, the Pelicans next play on Monday, April 20, at 7:05 p.m. ET, when they open a three-game road series with the Salem Red Sox at LewisGale Field.
The 2015 season marks the 17th season for the Pelicans franchise and first as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2015, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com .
