Reno Aces News Release
RENO - For the second time in as many nights, the Reno Aces (@Aces) found themselves in too big of a hole to dig out of. The Albuquerque Isotopes used a first inning grand slam from Dustin Garneau to win game two of the series, 9-4, at Aces Ballpark Saturday night.
Angelys Nina gave the Isotopes a 1-0 lead with a two-out base hit in the top of the first inning. After Tim Wheeler walked, Garneau hit the grand slam to make it a 5-0 game.
Reno grabbed a run back in the bottom of the first on a series of hits. Batting leadoff for the first time this season, Danny Worth worked a walk to start it. Danny Dorn singled to put runners on the corners, and Nick Evans doubled down the left-field line to cut the deficit to 5-1.
Three consecutive hits off Aces' starter A.J. Schugel (@Schug_knight) opened the lead back up to 7-1 in the third. They came from Wheeler, Garneau and Joey Wong. After a 4-for-5 game in last night's opener, Wheeler was on base another four times (two singles and two walks).
Reno cut it close in the home half of the third inning when right fielder Peter O'Brien belted a three-run home run to deep left. It was O'Brien's second homer in as many nights, and third on the season.
The bats cooled thereafter as left-handed reliever Aaron Laffey tossed three shutout innings. One baserunner - Nick Evans in the eighth - was all the Aces managed after the fifth.
Dorn continued to swing a hot bat for the Aces, collecting two more hits in four at-bats. It's Dorn's seventh multi-hit game of the young season. O'Brien and Evans both collected two hits as well.
Chris Rusin picked up the win for Albuquerque. The southpaw allowed four runs (all earned) in five innings of work. Schugel was charged with the loss for the Aces.
Game three of the series is set for Sunday afternoon at Aces Ballpark. Left-hander Vidal Nuño (2-0, 2.19) will start for Reno against right-hander Jair Jurrgens (0-0, 3.18). First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
