Morris helps Missions avoid sweep

San Antonio Missions News Release
A balanced offense and another fine effort from starter Elliot Morris gave San Antonio a much-needed 5-2 win over Tulsa before 5, 015 Saturday night at Wolff Stadium.
The Missions got off to a terrific start on Saturday when they jumped out to a 1-0 lead on starter Jeremy Kehrt in the first with Diego Goris' RBI single to right.
An inning later, San Antonio created some two-out magic, beginning with Morris' single up the middle. Travis Jankowski and Trea Turner followed with singles of their own to load the bases. Kehrt (0-2) appeared to be out of trouble when Casey McElroy lifted a fly ball to left fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker. However, Hazelbaker misplayed the ball, allowing all three runs to score to push the Missions' lead to 4-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, San Antonio upped their lead to 5-0 when Goris connected on another RBI single, this time off reliever Blake Smith.
The five runs (matching a team high for 2015) were more than enough for Morris, who allowed just three hits and four walks, while striking out a career-high, tying nine over five and a third innings to earn his first Double-A victory. The bullpen trio of Jay Jackson, Michael Dimock and Brandon Alger combined to rack up six more strikeouts over the final three and two-thirds innings. The 15 strikeouts set a new season high.
Offensively there were several stars that shined for San Antonio, including Jankowski, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair of walks. Joining Jankowski in the two-hit club were Turner (2-for-4, 2 runs), Goris and Jason Hagerty.
Tulsa spoiled the shutout bid in the ninth with a pair of runs off Alger.
San Antonio (4-5) resumes its season-opening homestand Sunday with the first of three against the Springfield Cardinals (2-7). Justin Hancock (1-1, 3.60) takes the hill for the Missions, while the Cardinals counter with fellow righty Andrew Morales (0-0, 1.80). First pitch is set for 2:05 PM. The first 500 kids 12 & under will receive a free cereal bowl courtesy of Kellogg's.
