Charleston RiverDogs News Release

SAVANNAH, GA - Catcher Eduardo de Oleo had two hits and two RBI and third baseman Allen Valerio capped off a four-run eighth with a two-run double, helping the Charleston RiverDogs past the Savannah Sand Gnats 6-4 Saturday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.

The RiverDogs (6-4) trailed 2-1 after the seventh, but exploded for four runs in the eighth against Savannah's (3-6) bullpen. Jorge Mateo stepped in with one out and worked a walk before stealing second and third. Dustin Fowler followed and tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single against Alberto Baldonaldo (0-1).

The catcher de Oleo stepped in against the new pitcher Cameron Griffin and broke the tie with a double to right-center that scored Fowler and put Charleston in front for the second time. Two batters later Valerio completed the inning with a two-run double and upped the lead to 5-2.

Savannah would not go quietly as they plated a pair in the eighth against Joe Harvey, but the righty came back and retired the side in order in the ninth, locking down his second save in as many chances.

The RiverDogs got the scoring going with a run in the first, courtesy of an RBI single from de Oleo, but the Sand Gnats responded with a run in the bottom-half of the inning against Domingo Acevedo in his inaugural start of the season. The score remained tied until the fifth when Savannah's Stefan Sabol put the Gnats in front with an RBI single.

Acevedo went the first inning and two-thirds and allowed the one run on two hits, a walk, and one strikeout. Andre Del Bosque bridged the gap and allowed just one run until Caleb Frare (1-1) took over in the sixth.

The southpaw struck out four over two scoreless and was the beneficiary of the offensive support in the eight and earned his first win of the season. Savannah sent Casey Meisner to the mound and he settled in nicely after the first. He finished six innings, gave up the one run in the first and struck out eight, but did not factor into the decision.

COMING UP: Charleston and Savannah square off in the finale of the four-game series Sunday afternoon beginning at 2:05 p.m. The RiverDogs are scheduled to send RHP Jordan Foley (0-1, 4.00) to the hill and the Sand Gnats will send RHP Josh Prevost (1-0, 6.00). The RiverDogs remain on the road until for four more games, before they return home and play host to the Savannah Sand Gnats for a four-game series starting Thursday, April 23. The homestand opens with a special visit from the Budweiser Clydesdales on the second Budweiser Thirsty Thursday of the season presented by 95SX. DJ Natty Heavy will be spinning today's popular tunes in the Ashley View Pub. If you can't make it to the games, be sure to tune in and listen to the broadcast starting with the Zaxby's pregame show beginning at 2:00 p.m. on "The Big Talker" 1250 WTMA.
