Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (April 18, 2015) - The Pelicans plated four runs in the first and never looked back, rolling to an 8-4 win and sweeping a doubleheader against the Winston-Salem Dash in front of 5,422 fans at BB&T Ballpark.

Myrtle Beach (6-3) jumped out of the gates quickly in the first frame against Dash southpaw Sean Hagan (0-1), making his first professional start. The southpaw yielded a leadoff single to Jacob Hannemann and a double to Mark Zagunis to put runners on second and third.

A passed ball charged to Dash catcher Sean O'Connell allowed Hannemann to score the game's first run. A Billy McKinney single brought in Zagunis, and Jeimer Candelario followed with a double to again put runners on second and third. The next batter, Jacob Rogers, singled in McKinney, and a Ben Carhart sacrifice made it 4-0 Pelicans.

Hagan was able to settle down after the first, yielding only a Carhart solo homer in the fourth. Hagan gave up five runs, all earned, on seven hits in a career-high 3.2 innings.

The Dash (3-7) cut into the Pelicans first-inning advantage immediately. Adam Engel doubled to leadoff the home half of the first, stole third and scored on Jake Peter's two-bagger. After a Trey Michalczewski groundout moved Peter to third, the Winston-Salem second baseman came in on Keon Barnum's sacrifice fly to make it 4-2 Myrtle Beach.

With Myrtle Beach up 6-2 in the fifth, the Dash were able to get back into the game on consecutive singles by Keenyn Walker, O'Connell and Engel, with O'Connell's scoring a run. An error by Myrtle Beach second baseman Daniel Lockhart allowed O'Connell to come in, making the score 6-4.

But the Dash would get no closer. The Pelicans scored twice in the top of the seventh, and Josh Conway worked two perfect innings to close things out for his first save.

Pelicans starter Paul Blackburn (1-0) gave up four runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings to earn the win. He walked one against four strikeouts.

Winston-Salem will try to salvage the four-game series by sending Tony Bucciferro (0-0, 1.59 ERA) against Myrtle Beach's Tyler Skulina (0-1, 1.59 ERA). Pregame coverage is available on wsdash.com/broadcast at 1:45 p.m. and the TuneIn Radio app. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
