Salem Red Sox News Release

SALEM, VA - A three-run sixth inning doomed the Salem Red Sox on Saturday night at LewisGale Field as they were taken down by the Carolina Mudcats 3-1. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak and marked the first time home loss of the year for the Red Sox.

Salem took an early lead in the bottom of the second when Anuery Tavarez scored on a Mario Martinez groundout. However, they would not score again, only putting two runners in scoring position over the last seven innings.

Teddy Stankiewicz lasted 5.1 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) for Salem. Stankiewicz (0-2) worked around trouble all night; he surrendered nine hits, walked one and stranded six runners on the basepaths. In the fateful sixth inning, Stankiewicz got a routine ground ball to shortstop from Jacob Schrader that Tzu-Wei Lin fielded and short-hopped past Martinez and out of play down the first base line. Schrader was awarded second base and later scored on a double from Carlos Franco, ending Stankiewicz's day.

Taylor Grover came on in relief to face Connor Lien, who doubled in Franco, a run that was charged to Stankiewicz. A Joe Odom sacrifice fly would later score Lien, pushing the lead to 3-1.

Steve Janas was marvelous for the Mudcats, delivering seven innings of five-hit baseball with just one run against. Janas (2-0) lowered his ERA to 0.69 in his second outing against the Red Sox.

Salem put a man on base in the ninth with a Tavarez single but went down quietly as David Peterson finished the game with two scoreless innings to pick up his first save in 2015.

The Red Sox and Mudcats finish their four game series at 4:05 p.m. on Sunday. Kevin McAvoy (0-1, 1.80) is scheduled to make his second start for Salem against Carolina's Tyler Brosius (0-0, 5.40). It's the first Family Funday Sunday of the season, featuring postgame kids runs the bases and a postgame autograph session.

Fans unable to attend can listen to the game on 1240 AM WGMN ESPN Roanoke, on salemsox.com or via the TuneIn Radio app.
