Calgary, AB - Philadelphia Flyers prospect Travis Sanheim scored at 7:45 of double overtime lifting the Calgary Hitmen to a 4-3 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers Friday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome, sending the Hitmen to the final four of the Western Hockey League Playoffs.
The victory gives the Hitmen a 4-1 series triumph and sets up a Round 3 match-up with the Brandon Wheat Kings. It will be Calgary's ninth trip to the Eastern Conference Final in franchise history.
Jake Virtanen forced overtime for the Hitmen in dramatic fashion, netting his second goal of the game with 44.9 seconds left in the third period. Jake Bean also scored for Calgary who erased deficits of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2.
Cole Sanford, Dryden Hunt and Markus Eisenschmid replied for Medicine Hat while both teams went 0-1 on the powerplay.
Calgary outshot the Tigers 58-55, including a combined 24-14 in overtime, with Saskatoon product Mack Shields making 52 saves to record the win.
The Hitmen and Wheat Kings Round 3 best-of-seven playoff series will begin on Friday, April 24, at Westman Communications Group Place in Brandon.
