Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (3-5) fell behind 4-0 in the first inning on Friday and could never erase that deficit, as they wound up falling to the Lakewood BlueClaws (5-4) by a final of 9-3. The teams combined for eight errors in the game, and five of them were committed by the Suns.
In the four-run first inning Lakewood sent nine hitters to the plate. Shortstop Malquin Canelo started off the frame with a double off the wall in center field. Right fielder Jiandido Tromp followed with a line drive single to left, putting runners on the corners with no outs. A passed ball by Suns catcher Matt Reistetter allowed Canelo to score from third for the first run of the game. Later in the inning, 1B Rhys Hoskins singled home Tromp from third to make it 2-0. Back-to-back errors by starting RHP Luis Reyes (0-1) and 3B Austin Davidson extended the inning and led to the final two runs of the frame being unearned.
Hagerstown sliced its deficit in half in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two-run blast into the visitors bullpen by 1B Jose Marmolejos. It was Marmolejos' second homer of the season and the team's seventh. Marmolejos now leads the team with his two homers.
That's as close as Hagerstown would get all night, as Lakewood started to pull away in the fourth. With a runner at first and one out, Canelo hit his second double of the night, this one driving home Grenny Cumana from first to make it 5-2.
Things then really opened up in the fifth. With two on and two out, LF Herlis Rodriguez tripled down the right field line, bringing in both runners to make it 7-2. That chased Reyes from the game, though his line didn't close until Rodriguez trotted home from third on a wild pitch to make it 8-2.
The final Lakewood run crossed the plate in the sixth thanks to back-to-back doubles by Tromp and CF Carlos Tocci. Hagerstown got its final run in the eighth on an RBI single by Reistetter.
Reyes suffered the loss as his final line read 4.2 innings pitched, eight runs allowed (six earned) on nine hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Starting RHP Tyler Viza (2-0) earned the win for the BlueClaws. He went five innings, surrendering two earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five.
These two teams will battle again in game three of this four-game series on Saturday night in Hagerstown when the Suns will send RHP Drew Van Orden (0-0) to the mound for his second start of the season. He will square off against RHP Ranfi Casimiro (0-1) for the BlueClaws. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05pm.
