Late Charge Not Enough in Game 3 Defeat

Everett Silvertips News Release

PORTLAND, OR - Three goals in less than two minutes late in the third period helped the Everett Silvertips mount a comeback, but a five-goal deficit proved too much to overcome in a 5-3 loss to the Portland Winterhawks in Game 3 of their second-round playoff series Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Silvertips now trail the best-of-seven series 2-1 with Game 4 coming up Friday night in Portland.

Kevin Davis, Ivan Nikolishin and Graham Millar all lit the lamp in a span of just 1:46 late in the third period to give Everett life, but the 'Tips could not add to the drama in the final two minutes with the goaltender pulled for an extra attacker. Logan Aasman assisted on two of the Silvertips' goals to give him four points in the playoffs and was also a +2 for the night.

The first period featured no goals and no penalties, but good pace up and down the ice between the teams. Portland built an 8-2 shot lead and had the puck possession advantage before Everett registered four of the last six shots in the period to make the margin 10-6 for the Winterhawks after 20 minutes.

The 'Hawks built upon their shot lead in the second period and put more pressure on the 'Tips, with Carter Hart stopping the first 25 shots he faced to keep the game scoreless. Everett was unable to capitalize on the game's first powerplay after Keegan Iverson was handed an instigator penalty for starting a fight with Dawson Leedahl, who had just delivered a huge hit on Nic Petan along the boards. Portland finally broke the stalemate with 2:08 left in the period as defenseman Anton Cederholm jumped into the rush and tapped in a Miles Koules pass from across the slot. Following a Silvertips penalty seconds later, Nic Petan sniped a shot from the top of the circle to give the Winterhawks a 2-0 lead after two.

Portland quickly added to the lead in the third with a pair of goals from Oliver Bjorkstrand, who scored at 3:22 and again on the powerplay at 5:09 to make the deficit four. Dominic Turgeon gave the 'Hawks a 5-0 lead before the Silvertips began the comeback when Kevin Davis skated into the offensive zone, fought through a defender and then slipped a low shot past Adin Hill to get Everett on the board. Nikita Scherbak then set up Ivan Nikolishin for a one-time finish across the slot and Graham Millar stuffed a shot past Hill front close range only 14 seconds after that to bring the 'Tips within two at 5-3. Time ran out on the comeback with the Everett net empty in the last two minutes to finish the game.

Carter Hart (5-4) took the loss with 30 saves on 34 shots before being relieved by Austin Lotz for the latter half of the third period. Winterhawks goaltender Adin Hill (6-3) made 16 saves and has his shutout spoiled with less than four minutes to play. The 'Tips were 0 for 2 on the powerplay, while Portland scored on 2 of 5 opportunities.
