Slugfest Ends in Series-Opening Win for JetHawks

ADELANTO, Calif. - The opening game of a four-game road series saw the JetHawks and High Desert Mavericks combine for five home runs in a 10-7 Lancaster victory on Thursday night at Heritage Field.

The Mavericks (4-4) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, when Ryan Cordell hit an opposite field, two-run home run. A.J. Reed countered with a solo homer in the top of the second, the first by a JetHawks player on the season.

High Desert's Zach Cone led off the bottom half with the third home run of the game, extending the Mavericks' lead to 3-1.

In the top of the fourth, the JetHawks (4-4) knocked starter Luis Parra from the game. With one out, Brett Phillips doubled.

That began a string of five consecutive hits for Lancaster, including two errors, and the JetHawks took a 7-3 lead against Mavericks starting pitcher Luis Parra.

Lancaster starter Zach Morton allowed a two-RBI single by Joe Jackson in the bottom of the fourth and left the game with a two-run lead. Morton walked two and struck out four, allowing five runs on seven hits.

Michael Feliz (1-1) took over in relief to begin the fifth, giving up an unearned run on a fielding error by third baseman J.D.

Davis, but then rebounded for a scoreless sixth.

Chase McDonald gave the JetHawks an insurance run on his first homer of the season to lead off the seventh and Phillips tripled then scored on a Moon sacrifice fly. Cordell hit his second homer of the game in the home half, putting the Mavericks within two runs, 9-7.

J.D. Davis extended his hitting streak to five games on an RBI single in the eighth, capping off the JetHawks' scoring.

Frederick Tiburcio took over for Feliz with two out in the eighth, retiring four consecutive batters to earn the save and give the JetHawks the win.

The JetHawks will face the Mavericks in the second game of the series Friday at Heritage Field in Adelanto. Evan Grills (0-1, 13.50) will start for the JetHawks, and the Mavericks will send Tyler Smith (0-0, 5.40) to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
