 San Antonio Missions

Missions held in check in Home Opener

April 17, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release

San Antonio ended up on the wrong end of a pitchers' duel as they fell to Tulsa 4-1 in front of a home-opening crowd of 5,683 at Wolff Stadium.

Thursday featured a highly anticipated rematch between Missions' right hander Colin Rea and Drillers' lefty Julio Urias. Last Friday in Tulsa, the two combined to toss 12 scoreless innings. Thursday at the Wolff was more of the same.

However, the scoreless streak came to an end for Rea when Travis Witherspoon led off the third with a homer to left center. An inning later, Tulsa upped their lead to 2-0 when Lars Anderson followed Corey Seager's leadoff triple with an RBI ground out.

The two Driller runs turned out to be the only ones of the game for awhile as Urias (1-0) kept the Missions at bay during his five and two-thirds innings. The 18-year-old allowed just four hits and one walk, while punching out 10 on the night.

San Antonio finally mustered a rally in the bottom of the seventh against the Tulsa bullpen. Catcher Jason Hagerty started things with a one-out double down the right-field line. After a Luis Domoromo grounder moved Hagerty to third, pinch-hitter Tyson Gillies got the Missions on the board with a single to right off reliever Jeremy Horst. Alberth Martinez followed with a single of his own to move Gillies all the way to third. However, Horst maintained the Tulsa lead when he got Trea Turner to bounce out to short.

Tulsa put the game away in the ninth when Seager drilled a two-run homer to right off reliever Chris Nunn.

Chin-hui Tsao kept the Missions off the board in the bottom of the ninth to pick up his first save of the season.

Rea (0-1) took the loss but once again pitched very well. The Cascade, IA native allowed just the two early runs on five hits and no walks, while fanning seven.

San Antonio (3-4) continues its first home series of the season against Tulsa (4-3) Friday, with first pitch slated for 7:05 PM. Bryan Rodriguez (0-1, 5.40) will take the hill for the Missions, while the Drillers counter with fellow righty Deck McGuire (1-0, 1.50). The first 1,500 fans to enter the Wolff will receive a free thermal mug courtesy of The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.
