River Cats Edge 51s Behind Parker's Big Day

Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Jarrett Parker hit his third home run of the season, tallying RBIs seven and eight en route to a 4-3 victory over the Las Vegas 51s on Wednesday afternoon at Raley Field. The River Cats scored just enough to back starting RHP Braulio Lara (1-0, 3.72) in what was only his second start since 2012.
With a runner on first in the top of the third, Parker made a great defensive play in right field, cutting off a ball that seemed headed for the corner and likely a triple for 51s shortstop Matt Reynolds. Parker got the ball back to the infield quickly, keeping Reynolds to a double and forcing Dilson Herrera to stop at third, saving the run and preventing the 51s from jumping out to an early lead. The River Cats would get out of the inning one batter later.
Parker's home run gave the River Cats their first lead of the day in the bottom of the fourth. With John Bowker on first and two outs in the inning, Parker turned on a 2-0 fastball, sending it out to right-center for a two-run shot. Parker would end the day 1-3 with 2 RBIs, one run scored and a walk, helping lead the way for the Sacramento offense. Adam Duvall and Brett Jackson both contributed to the victory with an RBI each.
River Cats starter Lara was shaky in the outing, putting men on in scoring position in four of the first five innings. Lara was able to pitch around the rough spots, ultimately striking out eight in the outing. The 51s did finally capitalize in the fifth, when they scored two on a sacrifice fly by Reynolds and an RBI-triple from Alex Castellanos. Lara would exit the game with two out in the fourth and the River Cats down. He went 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on nine hits and one walk, striking out eight. In his first two starts, Lara was totaled 14 strikeouts and just one walk in 9.2 innings.
Andrew Susac made his return to the lineup for the River Cats after missing three games with a bruised throwing hand. Susac caught all nine innings and lined a sharp single to center in his first at bat. He also scored from second on a Duvall single to tie the game at two in the bottom of the sixth. The throw from right fielder Travis Taijeron came in a bit wide and Susac made an excellent slide to the inside of the plate, missing the outstretched glove of catcher Kevin Plawecki. The hit was Duvall's first of the game and he has now hit safely in six of the River Cats first seven games and the last five in a row. Sacramento took the lead 4-3 later that inning on an RBI groundout by Brett Jackson, his second RBI on the season.
Hunter Strickland converted on his second save opportunity in as many days, sealing the victory for the River Cats. The team will square off with the 51s tomorrow night for the final game of this four game series. On the mound for Sacramento will be lefty Ty Blach (0-0, 2.57). Blach made his Triple-A debut last week against the Salt Lake Bees and allowed just two runs in seven innings in what turned into an eighteen-inning walk-off for the River Cats. He will go up against fellow lefty Darin Gorski (1-0, 0.00), who will take the bump for Las Vegas. Gorski tossed five shutout innings in his 2015 debut against Fresno, walking five and striking out five.
First pitch is 7:05 p.m. tomorrow night at Raley Field. Gates open at 6:00.
