Jesse Barfield, "Oil Can" Boyd Will Play in Legends Game

(Bridgeport, Conn. - April 15, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced that former Yankee Jesse Barfield and former Red Sox player "Oil Can" Boyd will play during the Heroes for Heroes Legends Game at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Thursday, July 9th. Barfield joins Charlie Hayes and Jim Leyritz on the Yankees Roster, and Boyd will join Ellis Burks and Bill "Spaceman" Lee for the Red Sox. More players will be announced in the coming weeks.

Jesse Barfield made his Major League debut in 1981 with the Toronto Blue Jays. He spent eight seasons with the Blue Jays before being traded to the New York Yankees to finish the 1989 season. He spent the next three seasons with the Yankees before he was granted free agency on November 4, 1992. During his time with the Yankees, Barfield racked up a .231 batting average with 62 home runs and 189 RBI. Jesse's best season came in 1986, when he owned a .289 batting average with a league-high 40 home runs and 108 RBI. That same year, he was selected to play in the MLB All-Star Game and was awarded both the Gold Glove and the Silver Slugger Awards. He won his second Gold Glove the following year in 1987. In 1,428 career Major League games, Barfield owns a .256 batting average with 241 home runs, 716 RBI and 715 runs scored.

Dennis Ray "Oil Can" Boyd attended and played ball at Jackson State University. He was drafted in 1980 and began his Major League career with the Boston Red Sox, making his debut on the mound in 1982. After eight seasons with the Sox, he signed with the Montreal Expos as a free agent at the end of the 1989 season, and then was traded to the Texas Rangers for his final Major League season before retiring in 1991. Boyd then spent 13 years pitching in the minor leagues from 1992 to 2005. In his ten years pitching in the Majors, Boyd racked up 78 wins with a 4.04 ERA and 799 strikeouts. His best year came in 1986, when he won a career high 16 games.

Proceeds from the Heroes for Heroes Legends Game will benefit ABRI/Homes for the Brave, a nonprofit based right here in Bridgeport that is dedicated to improving the lives of homeless individuals, especially Veterans.

Game time on Thursday, July 9th will be 7:00 p.m. General Admission tickets will be sold for $15.00 in advance or $20.00 at the gate on the day of the game. Tickets are available by calling (203) 210-BLUE, or going to www.bridgeportbluefish.com .
