Ottawa Champions News Release

Ottawa, ON - The Ottawa Champions have added some big league experience to their roster, signing former San Diego Padres LHP Andrew Werner to a contract.

The 28-year-old started eight games for the Padres in 2012, compiling a 2-3 record with a 5.58 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 40.1 innings.

Werner originally signed with San Diego as an amateur free agent following the 2010 season, where he went 11-5 with a 3.35 ERA for the Frontier League's Evansville Otters and Windy City ThunderBolts.

He was traded to the Oakland Athletics after the 2012 season, and spent 2013 with Triple-A Sacramento and 2014 with Double-A Midland.

"I'm really looking forward to the opportunity to play in Ottawa and to play for (Manager) Hal Lanier," says Werner. "My main goal is to come in and pitch well and help the teams win some games".

Lanier says he's excited to have a pitcher of Werner's caliber.

"He'll be our number one starter and we expect him to log a lot of innings", says Lanier. "He's a guy who the other pitchers can go to with questions because of his AA, AAA, and big league experience."

Lanier credits Director of Player Procurement Nick Belmonte with doing the heavy lifting to get the deal with Werner done.

More additions to the team's inaugural season roster are expected in the coming weeks as they prepare for Opening Day at Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton Park, May 22nd against the Sussex County Miners.

Season tickets are on sale for $475, flex packs are available for as low as $89.00, and single game tickets will be available in the coming days. Email tickets@ottawachampions.com, call 613-745-2255 or visit www.ottawachampions.com for more information.
