Ddoson Pitches Well But Game Goes Awry Late in 10-3 Loss
April 13, 2015 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release
RICHMOND, Va. - A pitcher's duel early turned askew in the seventh inning as the Squirrels scored seven times off the Curve bullpen en route to a, 10-3, win on Monday night in the series opener. Monday night's starter Zack Dodson spun five innings of scoreless innings for the Curve and continued the trend of solid starting pitching. Through the first five games, Curve starters have given up one earned run in 26 innings pitched.
Neither team was really able to generate much offense through the first six innings of the night before the Squirrels broke the game open with the seven-run seventh inning. Mitch Delfino started the scoring for Richmond with a solo homer to lead off the inning and the Squirrels piled it on from there. All told, they scored seven times on five hits while sending 11 to the plate against Tyler Sample (0-1) and Josh Smith.
Altoona did get a run back in the eighth thanks to a bases-loaded single by Edward Salcedo but Richmond then sent nine more to the plate in the bottom of the inning against reliever Jhondaniel Medina, who had his streak of not allowing an earned run end at 43.0 innings dating back to last April when he was with the Bradenton Marauders. Medina allowed three runs in the inning before outfielder Jon Schwind had to come in to get the inning's final out.
Gift Ngoepe homered to lead off the ninth and Josh Bell added a run-scoring single off reliever Tyler Rogers but it wasn't enough on Monday night.
Bell has now reached base in all five games that he has played in while both Keon Broxton and Eric Wood had their four-game hit streaks come to an end.
The Curve (2-3) and Squirrels (3-2) will meet at 6:35 p.m. for the second game of the three-game series on Tuesday night at The Diamond. Opening Day starter RHP Angel Sanchez (0-0, 0.00) gets the nod on Tuesday night in the RVA in the second game of the series. He'll be opposed by Squirrels Opening Day starter Chris Stratton (0-0, 3.60).
Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:20 p.m.
