Acadiana Cane Cutters News Release

The Acadiana Cane Cutters are happy to announce three new additions to their pitching lineup from Notre Dame. Sean Guenther, Nick McCarty, and Joey Cresta will make their Cane Cutters debut for the 2015 season. This marks the first time that the Fighting Irish will be sending players to Acadiana.

True Freshman Sean Guenther, will be looking to kick off his summer collegiate baseball career in a big way. The Lefty from Atlanta Georgia will compete for the closing or set up role within the Cane Cutters bullpen. Guenther has a 2.15 ERA and three saves in 17 appearances to kick off the month of April.

Guenther graduated from Marist School in May 2014. While he was there, he earned three letters in baseball, was named all-region and all-state as a senior after putting together a 1.04 ERA with 71 strikeouts. Guenther would finish his senior year ranked the 13th best LHP in Georgia.

"A solid left handed pitcher is a hard thing to come by, especially one who comes with three solid pitches in his arsenal," GM Richard Haifley said.

Junior Nick McCarty will be making his TCL debut, after pitching in the Northwoods league last year. Right Handed Pitcher, McCarty, starts the month of April with four wins and a 2.74 ERA in eight appearances. As a member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll Team, McCarty has a combined ERA of 4.84 with 69 strikeouts, in 118.2 innings pitched, in his last two seasons at Notre Dame.

McCarty started 11 games for the St. Cloud Rox this past summer. He recorded three wins, with 38 strikeouts in 57 innings of work.

"McCarty is having his best year as a starter, but what stands out the most is his strikeout to walk ratio," Head Coach Lonny Landry said. McCarty has walked 13 batters in 49.1 IP thus far.

Finishing up the list is the Right Handed Side Arm Pitcher, Joey Cresta.

The junior pitcher from Chester, PA is in his 3rd year with the Irish. Cresta plays the situational role, coming out of the bullpen in 3 games thus far.

Cresta was a Two-time all-conference and all-area selection from Plainfield North High School. He received all-state honorable mention in 2012 and helped his school win conference championships all four years. During his senior campaign, he led the team in strikeouts, set the school record for strikeouts in a season and had an era under one.

"This will be Cresta's first time playing summer collegiate ball, and we're excited for him to be getting his start here," stated Co-Owner Richard Chalmers.

The Cane Cutters are set to open their fifth season at home on May 28th, against the Victoria Generals. Season tickets are now available. Call (337) 451-6582.
