Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (APRIL 12, 2015) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, dropped the fourth and final game of their opening series in 2015, falling 5-0 to the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Sunday evening at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. On a Major League rehabilitation assignment, Cubs outfielder Chris Denorfia doubled to right field, going 1-for-2, and played left field in the second spot in the Birds lineup.

Denorfia doubled in the first inning off of Wilmington starter Eric Skoglund and later struck out against him. The newly-signed Cubs outfielder was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 5 with a strained left hamstring he suffered during Spring Training. He is the first Major Leaguer to rehab with the Pelicans since pitcher Tim Hudson made a pair of starts in 2009 and the first position player since catcher Brian McCann the same year.

The loss wraps up a series split with the Blue Rocks (2-2). Pelicans starter Tyler Skulina pitched well, allowing only three hits and striking out five in five innings of work. Wilmington center fielder Dominique Taylor supplied the only run that the right-hander allowed on a solo home run to left field in the second, handing the Blue Rocks a 1-0 lead. Skulina allowed only two more base hits plus a pair of walks before being relieved by James Pugliese to begin the sixth.

The tall reliever induced two quick ground outs before facing Taylor, who collected his third hit of the night. Left fielder Daniel Rockett doubled to send Taylor in to score and later came in as well when designated hitter Robert Pehl singled to right field.

Skoglund (1-0) held the Birds at bay through his 5 2/3 frames of work, allowing just three hits en route to his first victory of the year. Skulina (0-1) was saddled with his first defeat, allowing the lone run in five innings on the mound.

The Blue Rocks scored in the ninth inning for the second time in the series to put the game out of reach. Pehl clubbed his second single of the game to center field, and right fielder Logan Moon followed suit with another hit up the middle. Reliever Matt Brazis retired the next two batters in his first appearance of the year, and first in the Cubs system, but first baseman Frank Schwindel, who was hitless to that point, dropped a single into left-center field to score a pair of runs and give the visitors a 5-0 advantage.

Right-hander Robinson Yambati collected his first save of the year with two perfect innings to close the game, sealing the win for Wilmington and the first shutout of the Pelicans this season.

The homestand continues on Monday, as the Pelicans welcome the Salem Red Sox, with the first pitch at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET. The Pelicans will send right-hander Jen-Ho Tseng (0-0, -.-- ERA) to the mound, as the Red Sox counter with left-hander Daniel McGrath (0-0, -.--ERA). The game can be heard live on 1450 WRNN-AM ESPN Myrtle Beach, on the TuneIn Radio App, and via the MiLB First Pitch App, beginning with the Pregame Show at 6:45 p.m. The game will also air along with live streaming video on MiLB.tv (subscription required).

Monday night's game is also a Backpack Buddies Monday, where fans can donate an item from the approved Backpack Buddies Donation List and receive half-price admission.

The 2015 season marks the 17th season for the Pelicans franchise and first as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2015, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
