Marlette Slugs Blaze to 7-2 Win

April 12, 2015 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

A slumping Bakersfield Blaze desperately needed hits, and Tyler Marlette did one better, slugging two homers and driving in three runs en route to a 7-2 win over the visiting Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Sunday afternoon in Bakersfield.

The game began inauspiciously, as Blaze starter Carlos Misell allowed single tallies to the Quakes in the 1st and 2nd innings, setting the Blaze back 2-0 just a half into the game.

But the Blaze responded, ultimately scoring seven unanswered runs over the next seven innings.

Tyler Marlette began the scoring with a solo homer in the 2nd off Rancho Cucamonga starter Scott Barlow, and Tim Lopes followed one inning later with an RBI single to drive home Luis Caballero, knotting the score at two runs apiece.

The starters each settled in for the next three frames, and the game moved into the bullpens still deadlocked at two.

Emilio Pagan (W, 1-1) was the first man out of the pen for Bakersfield, and after looking a bit shaky on Thursday, Pagan appeared to have no rust today. Emilio breezed through two innings of work, allowing just one baserunner on a free pass.

The same could not be said for the Quakes initial reliever Victor Araujo. After retiring Jay Baum on a liner to begin the bottom of the 6th, Araujo got tagged for four runs in the span of four batters. Austin Wilson singled to third base before Tyler Marlette mashed his second long-ball of the game to give the Blaze a 4-2 lead. Marcus Littlewood followed with a strong at-bat for a walk, and Burt Reynolds clubbed an opposite field shot to put Bako on top 6-2.

The Blaze weren't quite done, as, after a scoreless 7th, Justin Seager doubled in the club's final run of the day in the 8th off A.J. Vanegas for a 7-2 lead.

For the Bako pen, Paul Fry worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the 8th inning to preserve the lead, and Will Mathis pitched around a pair of singles in the 9th to close it out.

The win moves the Blaze to 1-3 on the season, snapping a season-opening three-game skid and taking the lid off the 2015 win column with three more home games coming against the Modesto Nuts. Jake Zokan will make his Blaze debut in the opener, and Modesto sends Grahamm Wiest to the hill in opposition.
