Pino Dazzles in Omaha Debut

Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
Metairie, LA - Yohan Pino was sensational in his Omaha debut, allowing just one hit over seven scoreless innings in leading Omaha past New Orleans, 4-0, Sunday afternoon in the last of a four-game set at Zephyr Field. The Storm Chasers took three out of four in the season-opening series and claimed back-to-back victories in Louisiana for the first time since July 24-25, 2012.
The visitors got the scoring started in the second inning with a Matt Fields sacrifice fly and a two-out, two-run single from Gabriel Noriega off of NOLA starter Andre Rienzo, the first Brazilian-born pitcher to make it to the big leagues. The right-hander settled down to retire 10 of the last 11 batters he faced to finish off his five innings of work during which he allowed four hits, walked one and fanned four but was saddled with the loss. Cheslor Cuthbert provided the final run of the day with a home run in the ninth, his first of the season.
Kansas City reliever Luke Hochevar retired the side in order in the first inning in his second rehab appearance and was followed to the mound by Pino, who made 11 starts for the Minnesota Twins last season in his first bit of major league action. The right-hander gave up only a measly infield hit to Brady Shoemaker leading off the third inning before retiring the last 18 hitters he encountered. Pino struck out six and gave way to Buddy Baumann, who yielded a one-out base hit before getting Austin Waites to ground into a game-ending double play. The Storm Chasers last regular season nine inning shutout on the road came at Sacramento on June 9, 2014.
The Storm Chasers will send right-hander Clay Mortensen to the mound Monday night in the series opener against Memphis southpaw Jon Gast. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:45 pm and can be heard locally on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
