Norfolk Admirals News Release

ALLENTOWN, Penn. - For the fifth time, the Norfolk Admirals and Lehigh Valley Phantoms needed an extra frame to find a victor, but the Admirals prevailed Saturday night, 3-2, at the PPL Center.

The Admirals garnered a power play early in the first period from a Jay Rosehill cross-checking penalty. Brandon Montour dropped a pass to Shea Theodore manning the blue line. With Stefan Noesen posted in front of netminder Anthony Stolarz, Theodore wound up and put a slap shot on net. Through bodies in front, Noesen tipped the puck behind Stolarz at 5:48, allowing Norfolk a 1-0 advantage which lasted until the final minutes of regulation.

Lehigh Valley spoiled Ryan Faragher's shutout at 17:02. Oliver Lauridsen ripped a shot from the slot that ricocheted off Louis Leblanc's foot and out to the blue line. Robert Hagg picked it up and wristed it again on net, and Kevin Goumas backhanded the puck which glanced off the skate of Dave Steckel through Faragher's leg.

Norfolk answered just 28 seconds later as Montour rushed up the wing and up to the goal line. The defenseman flipped a backhander top shelf, which trickled into the twine during a scramble in the crease. Mike Sgarbossa registered the assist at 17:30 of the third period, giving the Admirals a 2-1 lead.

Tonight's game was destined for overtime and Blair Jones' tally with 45 seconds remaining made it a reality. Faragher was up for the task as he faced Scott Laughton's hard shot on net, but Jones was there to stuff in the rebound.

During three-on-three in overtime, Theodore broke out of the defensive zone with an outlet pass to Montour, who pushed it up to Friberg. The Admirals' leading scorer entered the zone and wristed the puck beneath the crossbar past Stolarz to win it, 3-2.

Stolarz saved 31 of 34 Norfolk opportunities, while Faragher stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced. The Admirals went 1-for-2 on the power play, and blanked Lehigh Valley on their single opportunity.

The Admirals play their final home game as an AHL franchise next Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. against Lehigh Valley, then wrap up the season the following night versus the Penguins in Wilkes-Barre.
