Tacoma Rainiers News Release
EL PASO, Texas -- Stefen Romero drove in five runs and Patrick Kivlehan homered in his first Triple-A appearance as the Tacoma Rainiers routed the El Paso Chihuahuas 17-5 at Southwest University Park on Friday night.
Tacoma trailed 3-0 before rifling off seven runs on seven hits in the top of the second inning. After John Baker and Carlos Rivero drove in runs with back-to-back RBI-singles, outfielder James Jones evened the score with a sacrifice fly that plated the catcher Baker.
The outfielder Romero put Tacoma on top for good with a two-run double that scored both Rivero and infielder Shawn O'Malley, and outfielder Franklin Gutierrez ballooned the lead to four runs with another two-run double two batters later.
The Rainiers combined to collect nine more runs on nine hits over their next three frames, highlighted by a three-run double from Romero in the third. Kivlehan, who entered the season ranked by Baseball America as the No. 4 prospect in the Seattle Mariners farm system, drove in two more runs with a double in the fifth inning and then added a solo home run in the ninth.
Tacoma tallied a total of 20 hits against El Paso. Romero led the charge after going 4-for-6 with five RBI, and one night after hitting his first career Triple-A home run, the third baseman Rivero posted a 4-for-5 effort against the Chihuahuas.
Starter Roenis Elias (1-0) collected the win despite allowing five runs - four earned - on six hits over 5.0 innings. The left-hander walked three and struck out six. Relievers Justin Germano (2.0), Joe Saunders (1.0), and Dominic Leone (1.0) combined to strike out three over 4.0 hitless, scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
The Rainiers (1-1) return to action tomorrow to play the third game of a four-game series at El Paso (1-1) tomorrow, April 11. Right-hander Sam Gaviglio (NR) is slated to make his first career start for the Rainiers against Chihuahuas left-hander Robbie Erlin (NR). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
