Calgary Hitmen News Release
Medicine Hat, AB - Mack Shields made 33 saves in a first star performance backstopping the Calgary Hitmen to a 3-1 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers Friday night at The Arena.
The victory gives the Hitmen a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven Round 2 WHL Playoff series with the Tigers.
Jake Virtanen led the scoring attack with a goal and an assist while Connor Rankin, with his team leading eighth goal of the post season, and Chase Lang also scored for the visitors.
Calgary jumped out to a 2-0 lead just over 16 minutes into the first period before the Tigers produced their lone goal of the night on a tally from Dryden Hunt with 10.9 second left in the opening frame.
The two teams then played a scoreless second period before Lang added an insurance marker for Calgary who was outshot 34-14 in the series opener.
Both teams failed to produce a powerplay goal with Calgary going 0-1 and killing all three Medicine Hat chances.
The Hitmen and Tigers series now returns to the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary on Sunday and Monday for Games 3 and 4.
