BlueClaws Drop 12-Inning Heartbreaker on Friday

LAKEWOOD, NJ - Kannapolis scratched out an unearned run in the 12th inning, taking the lead on a Chris Curley RBI double, and the Intimidators topped the BlueClaws 4-3 on Friday night at FirstEnergy Park.

The Intimidators (1-1) and BlueClaws (1-1) have now split the first two games of their season-opening four-game set, with both games being decided in the last inning (Lakewood won 2-1 on a Carlos Tocci walk-off single in the 9th inning on Thursday).

The BlueClaws had several chances on Friday but left 19 runners on base, their most in the last five seasons. Lakewood left the bases loaded in the first inning and the 10th inning and runners on base in each of the first 10 innings.

Kannapolis took a 3-1 lead in the 6th inning scoring on an RBI single by Mason Robbins and an error by Lakewood second baseman Grenny Cumana. The BlueClaws tied the game in the 7th inning on a passed ball and a bunt single by Derek Campbell.

Matt Hockenberry threw three scoreless innings of relief for the BlueClaws, while Joey DeNato allowed an unearned run in the 12th inning to take the loss. Kelvis Valerio threw three scoreless innings for Kannapolis and Devon Davis got the last six outs to earn the win.

Malquin Canelo had three hits for the BlueClaws, while Carlos Tocci, Rhys Hoskins, Deivi Grullon, Derek Campbell, and Grenny Cumana each had two.

The teams continue their series on Saturday at 4:05 pm. RHP Tyler Viza (-) starts for Lakewood opposite Kannapolis RHP Yelmison Peralta (-).
